osb 3 boarding on ceiling

Hi

It's a quick question. I am trying to get some work done on my new work shop. I was told that osb 3 board may not be suitable due to possible dampness/ moisture for the ceiling.
I am open to other suggestions but I am trying to keep costs down.
I was planning to just to put up on the ceiling. I am going to rip down the old lose lime ceiling.

put what you like up there,long as its sealed from any moisture properly you'll be fine

Thanks That was my thoughts all i need to do is put a few slates on roof. I can't wait to get it done as I am fed up of working on this house.

hang on,you said ceiling,is this board going directly under the slates or on the joists inside ie the ceiling itself?

Oh sorry. Is an old out house . It's going straight on to the joists. It's currently lath and plaster that's all falling off.

A good 2 or 3 coatings of any cheap oil based paint or bitumen on the top side of the board ie the side facing the roof paying attention to the boards edges,should do ya for a good while

sorry but you may cause more problems elsewhere by doing that, you have a water leak that has been wetting stuff if your not careful you could end up with wet rot or dry rot on the woods air vents is advised or a trickle vent being used

Would it have just been natural ventilation before as it was organically a out builsing/house with Lath and plaster ceiling.

Their us no signs of vents or anything. The building is built around 1900a.

the lime plaster breaths yes you can over board it just allow trickle vents on the outside the outbuilding is based upon air circulation and so is the house we are sealing houses up trapping what used to happen naturally

your fine just use either plasterboard or use 6-9mm osb boards please remember your weight you can strengthen a little to the ceiling by adding 3x2 above the ceiling to the roof joists add insulation above then the above beams will be within a cold roof usage

the trickle vents are more used outside under the barge board under the gutter you can install trickle vents via the barge board by drilling a small hole and sticking in a plastic cover

Thanks for your help. Aye think I will be running some timber down the middle to catch the edge of the sheets.

You can add a strip of OSB or timber above the joins and just screw to that to join the two sections of OSB together if they don't match the rafters.

OSB will be fine on ceiling. I have it on my walls in my workshop and even on the floor in one section. I put plasterboard on the ceiling and wish I just used OSB as would have been a lot easier as I taped and plastered all my joins which was a PITA.

it's just your workshop ?

why not leave it open? seams to solve all your problems that way ?

bonus room for tall stuff - like lengths of wood/metal on end

and you can always add some storage up there later on ?
