Opinions on drummond lathe

I'm a newbie when it comes to lathes but keen to get one and have a go, seen this come up near me and was wondering if anyone has any opinions on it?

Also if anyone could highlight any key things to be looking out for in terms of wear etc

Nice little lathe but I would say overpriced. Do a search on "Drummond" or "Myford" to compare a few.

^^^^Agree, I have seen similar go for around £100 to £150 fully working and in fact 4 years ago I bought a Drummond on a stand for less than £100.

I'm guessing you're going for this because its nearer to home? but I myself would give it a miss despite it being near to me,plus the motor needs attention is it knackered? and by the looks there are no belts so that initself is more money to fork out.

But thats only my opinion of wanting a lathe all in one ie no motor thats needing fixing to a plinth

A thing is only worth what you personally value it at, if it was in nice order I would be happy to spend perhaps a £120 to £150 but not £200, considering the motor requires repair or replaced.

An individual who wants a Drummond and nothing else will do, may well think it's worth £400 or even more.

Perhaps worth watching and if it does not sell see if it is relisted at a lower price, the buyer obviously has some sentimental value placed on it or simply thinks or has been told by a mate down the pub that it's worth what he is asking.

I have listed items before on Ebay that I was not too bothered about selling so placed an high price on them, if they sold ..great, if not I was happy to keep them... and some sold.

Sounds like it's worth giving a miss then, its really a matter of finding something not too far away that's half decent, I'm happy to spend more on something worth it but don't want to pay over the odds for something. I'll wait for something else to come up at a more reasonable price, thanks for the good advice as always

500 mile round trip to collect though which is a bit far really, I wouldn't really fancy couriering a lathe either, I reckon it would end up fairly knocked about

This is the problem in buying a piece of heavy machinary,its either too far away or cost a bomb for courier.

Looks a nice lathe for the price and if I was in the running for a Lathe that would get my full attention and I'd hire a small van and take a run up there but I'm nearer to it than you.

Definitely overpriced. Being down South, you shouldn't take too long to find a half decent lathe. Most of the decent kit seems to end up down South, for some reason. Either that or we're just on the Sod's law rule that everything will be at the opposite side of the country when you're after something.


Edit: I am referring to the Myford M type, btw.

That boxford lathe looks like a bargain for someone IMO, assuming it's not got totally chewed up bearings and ways.

well phoning up would find that out,I blew the pic up,seems the ways are in good enough condition.

certainly a bargain and I think that he would take £230 if it was a genuine offer.

The Drummond is very lightweight, a Boxford is a much more usfull machine + there are loads of them about so parts and accessories are ready avalable.

That Drummond M is worth about half what they are asking. My dad's one was in better nick, had more stuff with it, sat on a cabinet and was fully operational and it sold for less than £200 IIRC. That also had tumble-reverse which I don't think is rare at all for a M.
