operating Cut 40 help required

Hi folks I'm new on here and need some help. I have just bought a Cut 40 plasma cutter off the bay and the "instructions" leave a bit to be desired to say the least. Can anyone tell me the role of the switch on the front panel which has 2 settings 5.0s and 2.5s. I mainly want to use it to cut 0.8mm up to 3mm sheet (steel) - what settings should I use and at what pressure should I set the air regulator I would also like to know do I actually touch the material with the torch continually, initially or never during cutting. Spoke to "Bozy" about one of these earlier in the same group funnily enough...

Set the air regulator to about 0.4 to 0.6 MPa and get your compressor up to full pressure...
Try the 2.5s setting first on thin stuff and bring the torch nozzle close to the workpiece but not touching. Try to avoid making contact as you'll only knacker the tip...

Tap the button and you should get a nice small arc between the tip and the work piece as the plasma's produced. You'll know if it's running ok as there'll be a shower of sparks from the other side...

Ok thanks for that, what is the purpose of 2.5s or 5.0s and what current should i try and roughly what distance should I try to keep the tip from the work ?

Isn't it just air postflow? 2.5 or 5 seconds?
Regarding current, do some test cuts and find the lowest setting that will give you a clean cut.

I was under the impression that the tip was supposed to be in contact with the metal and short tip life was par for the course.

A "Castle tip" can be dragged, a regular one will need a 1/16" gap.

A castle tip has grooves cut in the face.

Hi i have the same cutter but couldn't get mine to start cutting how did you get on ?

I haven't tried it yet but will let you know when I do, probably Sunday

A "Castle tip" can be dragged, a regular one will need a 1/16" gap.

A castle tip has grooves cut in the face.

Castle tips are a lot easier to use freehand than a regular one with a 1/16" gap.

Well I have tried to use the Cut 40 this afternoon and I can't get the bloody thing to work

I had everything hooked up as it should be and when I pressed the switch the air would come out of the nozzle and I could hear a relay switching in the unit BUT NO ARC so more than a bit miffed

Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi,

my Berlan was faulty, there's a thread somewhere on here about it.

After some testing it proved to be a faulty transistor on the bottom board (as I recall) but I'd already bought a replacement board.

I have nine spare transistors (as I bought a pack of ten) if you need one, no charge!

Thanks for the offer, but I am trying to get a replacement unit from the supplier if that doesn't work I will certainly take up your offer.

I have tried everything to get it to work reduced air pressure so it wont blow out the arc, increased the current setting, different types of metal, scraping the tip but still no bloody arc so the conclusion is it's a faulty unit.

Just incase the torch is wrongly assembled does anyone have an exploded view of how it should be ?
I am open to any other suggestions !

I know it's stating the obvious but have you checked the earth return lead? Check both ends of the cable where it enters the dinse plug and the clamp and also inside the machine where the dinse connector is terminated.
If all checks out ok then at least you won't feel daft if you send it back and all they find is a loose connection.
