There's various designs about, CK, Sata...
Anyone got/used ,any particular ones you'd recommend?

Had a Clarke set years ago and moved them on. Now I want again.

It was about 20 years ago now. Bought in the Plymouth branch of MachineMart.
They were the type with a short jaw one side, very much like the snapon style.

I brought one , for one specific job . It was not the tool I thought it was .
Might even have been 13mm , I'll look in the places it might have landed .
If I find it and it's 13mm I'll send you it - if it's not 13mm then it's **** out twice , so it'll get thrown further !

MAC...same quality as Snap-on but cheaper, also Teng are very good too.

What I would say is maybe one with a lever reverse rather than flip it over. I’ve got several sets - snap on, craftsman, Halfords and good wrench and I’m forever putting them in backwards and having to flip over. Use 10mm most but they are probably one of the most used tools I have.

We buy a Facom one, cut it down, carefully machine and grind chamfers, flats etc all over the working end to clear various components in one of machines, turning a one flat at a time mind numbing time consuming task on 24 spring loaded nuts into a few minutes. Same when reassembling.

No moving parts on the Facom one, some others have spring loaded bits which strike me as something to fail, jam or break.

I found the one I made into the prototype in Harbor Freight when I was on site in the US - took ages to find the Facom one in the UK.

We had some clever battery tools to tighten the flare nuts on brake, air-con pipes etc. slide the jaw over the nut, pull the trigger and the jaw would spin to tighten the nut down to correct torque then let go of the button and slide it up onto the pipe where the jaw would index itself so you could pull the tool off. Hate to think how much they cost though.

To be clear, are we talking about combination spanners where the box ends ratchet, or spanners where the open end ratchets?, both are a thing...

I'm guessing the former, in which case most are pretty good now, quality ratchet mechanism are made in Taiwan where they hold/held the patents, by the likes of kabo or reversegear, and fitted to the spanners. E.g stahwille used their forging with a kabo mechanism. I personally like the facom ones, they are my favourite.

Even the Chinese clones are pretty decent now. Got a set of "Forge steel" ones which are fine for what they are.

For the latter style of spanner, I would say probably facom 467BR, but I never really got the point of them in all honesty.

Screwfix do Wera Joker ones but they’re quite spendy.
