Open Corner Weld

After more attempts than I care to think of I've finally managed this on 6mm bar It needs a lot more work though but at least it's sort of ok.

Now I've got to do the same on 10mm I've 'borrowed' a couple of bits of 10mm from classes to have a play this weekend but not sure where to start to be honest. I know the instructor wants a 2.5 gap filled with a 2.5 rod at around 90A but as for the rest I don't know (guessing a 3.2 fill and 4 cap? stringers, weave?)

Any advice would be greatfully received

It was a shot in the dark but had a go this morning, 90A with a 2.5 for root. Quite plesed really, not perfect (bit of a glitch when I started a new rod and the mask flickered a couple of times) but better than I expected (even managed to do one on 6mm first time round, thats a first!)

Just goes to show that a skinfull of cider on a Saturday night makes you a better weldor on a Sunday

If I can sort out my stop/starts I reckon I'll be halfway there.
For some reason I'm finding the 10mm easier than the 6mm

looks better than my stick welding! i always have that the arc wanders to one of both sides...

With the small start/stop issues fixed the weld is very good imho!

id step up the rod dia, to a 3.2, if its a 6013 root at around 90-120 amps, keep the initial pass to a stringer, In fact on that size of fill id be upto a 5mm on the fill and caps, with a 3.2 however you would want to build that using more of a stringer technique...

That's what I've had all along! For some reason now it doesn't happen anymore, but I don't quite know why I think it may be more amps and a slower travel speed but, as I say, I'm not sure
I think the only answer in my case is to practice more.

If you have the power for a 4mm yep cap with that, arc wander/blow, can be caused by several things, bad rods/current type/ incorrect technique/travel speed, I think in your case tho, Its because the rod isn't laying down enough material, step up the rod size and keep the weave small then see what happens...
