Due to putting a very cheeky bid on a milling machine in an online auction i am now the proud owner of a AJAX AJT4

Where do i put it?

Well about my only option is into the worlds dampest workshop

Water flows across the floor when it rains. On a cold day it rains inside due to the tin roof.

So ideas on protecting it until the proper workshop is built

A very good spray coat of Shell Ensis anti rust oil. Dilute a bit with white spirit to make it sprayable and cover everything twice! I stored my entire workshop for a year in a barn that dripped with water. Gave it a good spraying and all came out fine EXCEPT the bits I missed

X2 on Shell Ensis fluid, Used it for years on steam turbine machined surfaces when in storage, Or awaiting overhaul.

I once bought 7.5 tons of redundant computer peripherals back in the 1980's sight unseen as the price was right (£550) - good theory until I found out that the rental in the warehouse they were in was going to cost several hundred pounds a month. It took three removal vans several trips to stack them in our in our admittedly quite large dining room to a level above the picture rail

Wife wasn't over pleased - in fact she made me sell the three seater Hoveraire Hoverhawke (*) that I was refurbing on the back lawn

BUT - the profit on those computer bits (this is well pre PC's) paid the deposit on my last house

+1 for wax coating, I would stand it on a pallet, wrap it in old blanket and tarp it up with a lead lamp under the table to give a little heat to keep the damp away.

I was on a course in Stonehaven a while ago, nice place. I stayed in the hotel on the seafront with all the beers and chucked most of my meal allowance over the bar instead

I bought my mill the same way... I bet there's loads of us, we should start a club!


if you put a cover over it, and a low power light bulb (20watt?) it would be enough that it would be every so slightly warmer than the air around it, which will stop condensation forming on the steel ?

(because it would cool down overnight, then when warm air blows in during the day the moisture in it will condense out onto the cold steel)

If it's that cottrills one then you got it for probably 10% retail.

It is only worth £2000 not £3000

Oh well it came fitted with a DRO and a free center drill
