Ive got the hang of feeding wire and oddly enough i found ali welding more enjoyable than mild steel

follow the advice on here and do it while yer watching telly.
might feel a bit daft but it'll be worth it long term.

Nah, haha a stupid bt router its due an upgrade too, kind of broke at the right time, sucks that i cant upload photos from my android phone.

We've had a Luke at them now I can use my phone to access the internet through the computer, plug it in via USB and enable tethering. It comes in handy sometimes.

Cheers, was wondering to myself the other day if there was such a thing as 'tethering' as you call it. Wish I knew that before.

Well, you certainly learn something new everyday!

How does my Ali TIG weld joint look? Its done in 3mm Ali plate, at 105 amps. Once the metal has saturated itself with heat and the puddle begins to form, Ali is rather pleasurable to weld. The filler rod was a 3.2mm, Do you think I have put down too much metal on that joint? There is minimal penentration on the back side, but it was starting to creep through.

Joint should be at 90 degree, slight gap to allow pene (did you get pene?) Amps are about right, use 2.5 dia filler, 3.2 is a tad on the heavy side, good effort tho.......

it looks pretty good for your first go at ali... but as allready said the 3.2 will cool the weld alot and put alot of metal ontop but not into the actual joint, as you probably know penetration is quite important

Pene was hit and miss, looks to be there at the beginning, tailing off in the middle, then as the metal was really heating up, pene came back again.

As the guys have said, way too much filler, for corner to corner joints you tend to use melted parent material as filler for the joint as well as wire

Apart from that though, pretty good, the main thing is you seem to be keeping everything consistent along the full length of the joint

I had my techs knock up 50x50 angle iron jigs, anngle is inverted, like an upside down /\ with a flat machined / \ < like so. Sheet clamped to angle. leaving slight root gap, not only does the angle give the trainee a chance to master this particular joint, machined / \ acts as an argon trap, which basically purges root side of joint...............................
