Online Metal Supplier

Sorry if this has been covered before.

Just getting myself started in welding, bought myself a welder and got hold of some scrap to practise on but wondered anyones thoughts with regards to online suppliers? How do they compare price wise to a local supplier? Anyone have one they'd recommend?

Roody when you consider the price for sheet metal on the likes of ebay, then compare to buying for steel stockiest. I bought 2 sheets of 1.2mm steel, Think they were 1.5 meters by 2 meters. about £23 a sheet. That was about year and a half ago and I collected so no delivery charge.

There's only one way to find out isn't there,buy local or phone them up with a price for whatever you're wanting to weld,then compare it with online prices.

Personally i find that buying local is no contest were mild steel is concerned £24 against £48 online per 6mtr length 50mmx50mmx3mm is somewhat a huge saving don't ya think.
Only time i have to shop online is when the stockist doesn't do aluminum plate.

Also buying local offer a service for cutting to size(same as online but that bumps the price up even further) £1.50 per cut length.

You are not really going to get a clear answer, we all have different local suppliers, my local supplier beats online by a big margin, some local suppliers don't want pestered by the small guy so charge a high price which scares you away or if you go ahead and buy makes it very profitable for them.

So without some phone calls the best you will know is: as a rule local suppliers are cheapest but not always.

i buy fairly local, about 12 mile each way but the guy is cheap to me as my mrs uncle uses him a lot for tractor repairs. i used to use metals4u.co.uk but they charge about £12 delivery under a certain price so they are only really good for big bulk orders that i couldnt get home in the car anyway

Parkers Steel have a very good website, ordering online is easy, delivery free on orders over £60, and prices comparable to what I would pay locally (but in reality cheaper, as I dont need to spend time collecting).

I've used the metal store I think it's called online, similar again I think it's free delivery over 100 quid or otherwise something like £12

I've had a look at the metal store, prices seem lower than those on eBay etc and the free delivery for orders over 70 quid less the vat makes it an attractive and convenient choice.

There is a Dyfed Steels depot in Cullompton, and Mole Valley Farmers sell steel from their yard in Witheridge.

Where abouts are you in South Devon... I know Austen Knapman (Paignton) deliver to a fair area, and also run an online shop...

I had not managed to find that list, many thanks for that. I am in kingsbridge so not far from Plymouth or Paignton.

I only need a bit to get my going and do a couple of jobs, got some projects in the pipe line when time allows, shall make some calls tomorrow.
