One for the the PC techs

Just bought a Dell Inspiron running Windows 10, plugged in our faithful, slightly battered but still wonderful-sounding JBL M310J 2.1 speakers and the volume-up control on the speaker won't work. The right-hand desktop speaker has the controls on it, a + and - button and they worked fine plugged into our 10+-year-old PC running XP. Through I might have damaged them somehow in the transfer so tried them plugged into our also new Asus laptop running Windows 10, worked fine. You get sound out of them when plugged into the PC and youcan use the - button to turn the volume down, and pressing both simultaneously mutes/unmutes the speakers as it always did, so the + button is working, it just won't increase volume. I'ma tad non-plussed as the speaker with the controls onit plugs directly into the subwoofer so I'm at a loss to see why how the PC could be interfering with the volume controls but that's what seems to be happening.
Any ideas chaps/chapesses?

has it got any sound software Enhanced digital sound mine has and you toggle between speaker and headphone

problem is called Win 10
sounds like your speakers drivers on win 10 are not suitable did you have a cd with the speaker set up or not
try right mouse click on speaker icon go from there

try a set of headphones first then go for drivers on the laptop

Is the volume turned up/off mute on the Inspiron?

Windows 10 likes to control everything, actually suits me as I use optical out to a DAC and just use the volume on the amp
But if you need sound card drivers you may have issues, make sure you have the latest versions

Thanks for the replies, volume is turned up, sound software is Realtek High Definition Audio. I could understand it being Windows 10 if the laptop weren't running it as well, so I ahev toassume it's somethign to do with the sound card on the Dell? The laptop asks ypu what you've plugged in as it has a combination socket fopr speakers,mic, headset, headphones etc, the PC doesn't need to. I've checked as best a non-techie can for updates and it's found none,I'll see if Dell support can be of any assistance.

on older systems it had an internal level setting for the sound level found within the sound speaker if someone has messed with these settings the sound can be muted yet outputting at full volume at the same time



if any of those settings is alterted you get no sound from the speakers even if its set at full volume but thats within the sound cards setup drivers so watch out for it

you can also uninstall the drivers and force a reinstall of them when rebooting the system back up

Look in the BIOS. Maybe sound is disabled? Also check Device Manager to see if there are any disabled devices or if there are any driver issues.

If it's working in wWindows 10 on the Asus but not the Dell it's the Dell that has a problem not 10. Is there anything flagged in device manager as mr Miller says ?

It is still there in 10, just looks a little less clunky.

Checked device manager and it sayeth both Pro 900 (whtever the hell that is) and Realtek High Definition Audio are workig properly and drivers are up to date. It's a bloody weird one as I can turn the volume down but not up, and I know the volume increase button on the speakers works as you have to press both to mute/unmute and this function is fine, it just doen't appear to let me turn it up?

Have you looked in the laptops bios for the audio parameter?
