one for the petrol heads

looking for a front wheel drive automatic gearbox, going to be glued on to a subaru engine so needs to be able to handle 200 plus horses, clearly things like volvo T5 and golf VR6 spring to mind as they are behind reasonably powerfull engines and should be up up the job, but what l need is gearbox is that not run by the engine ecu, a stand alone transmission ecu would be ok or better still old fashioned kick down cable, so whats oldish to get away from the electronics yet reasonably stout, any suggestions ?

yes possibly but l havent got my head round audis yet, l look under one bonnet and the engine is east west and the next one l look at is north south

to fast stuvy, what gearboxes are these , toyota ? if so off which model,

what about older ford seirras or however you spell it
they must have had a go faster V6 what auto box would that have used ?

Sierras are rear wheel drive so not what is wanted. You could have problems mating the engine up to any box with integral bellhousing. What Subaru engine and which way round are you mounting it?

quite right, mondeo was what l was looking at in my head but sierra is what l typed

scooby engine out of an impreza or possibly legacy, mounted in the rear with the crank pully facing the rear with a transverse gearbox on the back so as what was the driveshafts become the propshafts to each diff, this my pals buggy, l am just going to use a subaru forrester engine and box and not complicate things more than they need to be

well the mondeo was a replacement for the sierra, <as its spelt!

so stuvy dident they do a a st220 or something simalar ? if so what box would be found in that ?

sorry andy, yes they did the ST220 in the mondeo with a fwd box. 5speed in the 2.8v6 or 6speed in some ST's(newer ones as opposed to the ST200) and a few 2.5 v6's.

You could look for the XR4x4 with 2.0 engine and 4wd, come up on ebay every now and then cheap.

Just done some searching, and I recon your best bet would be the box out of a volvo 850 cheap, available and capable of the power transmission your looking at.

evo gearboxes are pretty tough not that cheap though . will handle the power your talking of though . also mk5 golf gti manual boxes are just cable very tough too my brothers makes 340bhp

more inpotantly how do you want the engine sat in relaion to the gearbox.

subaru engine being an opposed flat 4 is wide but not very tall, so the block will get in the way of driveshaft on an autobox that was desinged for a transversly mounted engine.

im thinking autobox from a big old audi, inline engine with fwd also handel the power and no
electronics

early volvo auto box sounds promising will investigate that one,

evo box would undoubtedly be strong enough but are they front wheel drive and auto ? l would have thought 4 wheel drive and manual ?

and yes the packaging is very tight but the drive shaft should just sneak under the head and past the exhaust downpipe, loverly compact engine with a low centre of gravity the only thing that stops you mounting it really low down is the exhausts heading straight down at the floor out of the heads and having to do a 180 degree turn to get up out of the way, h'mm l wonder if the heads would fit on up side down so the exhaust ports were on top

will look at audi's but arnt they a transaxle like a subaru ?

No good, AWD and manual. There was an auto but don't go there !

Yup, they're for a longitudinal engine position.

they sure did but unfortunatley they arnt a transverse gearbox they are a transaxle, driveshafts would be facing the wrong way, but thanks anyway
