centers for studs on walls ,,,, those ones ?
or the alignment marks for the printer maybe . Now Im going to have to go and have a look ,,, well ok maybe tomorrow .
Aim marks for ambitious men ?
Depth gauge for how deep the do do is on a given day...

On a similar note ,, I once had a really nice stanley tape that got damaged at the end ,,, but it was new and expensive at the time ,,,, so I just cut the last four inches off , and rivited the end hook back on ...

no bother ,,

I was making gates at the time for folk ,,, I never had any bother ,, my stuff fitted really well once made .
other folk working off my drawings and measurements just couldnt say the same ,,,

I worked for a tight wad with a few tapes like that .
Funny watching the bellend throwing money away reworking stuff , even funnier if it's been away for galv and powder coat !

Yep , ,,, its a lot easier to cut a bit off , than it is to try and cut a bit on.

Thanks never knew what they were for. So my tape has 16" multiples marked in black, great for 8' x 4' sheets I get that but on @pedrobedro link it jumps to 19.5", don't get that at all just doesn't work on a 4' wide sheet.

From the blurb in that link, basically spacing studs out.


The first black diamond is at 19.2” and after that black diamonds appear at 38.4”, 57.6”, 76.8” and 96”, or 8-feet. That is one less stud for every 8-feet of wall, counting the beginning and end studs.

Not sure if they still do this, maybe one for @eLuSiVeMiTe or @gaz1. When pre stressed roofing trusses first came out they were spaced apart more that the conventional 16"centres, needed thicker plasterboard to stop it sagging and I suppose if the loft was boarded out the same thing would apply.

no there not 11mm osb board or chipboard are the worst

id like to make the person who requests those measurements to be used to be above 2 floors high on a rain soaked board

hes going to squirm thats guaranteed those boards flex rather well even at that spacing

and some have been known to go through that thickness as not enough support for the board

I believe the 19.2" spacing is for engineered floor joists, as they can save a joist per sheet - don't think it would be used for stud layout.
Pretty much an American thing anyway.
