Well thanks to you and VW spares you saved me or should I say the other halfs daughter £50 or so on the exhaust section ......

I rang them.spoke to a very helpful guy , they couldn't better the £100 or so quote I'd had locally but suggested I try eBay ( he was looking as I was talking to him on the phone ) he gave me the VW part number and said there's sellers in Germany could do it for £50 or so .....
Anyway I have one on its was from Poland as we speak .

how long do parts usually take from auto doc ,. ?

they seem a decent enough firm , service parts are similar to cheapest on ebay and arrive next day , i try to use them when i can

Hydrocarbon fuel ... the hydro prefix means water as in hydroplane and hydroelectric.

To be completely pedantic, in this case it means hydrogen Although Hydrogen means "maker of water" so 6 and 2x3....

These type of small cars are often owned by similar breed of people. Often they do very few miles yet when you look at MOT history they will have failed many times even on the simplest stuff.

We have 2 Polos, both bought cheap with some issues. A 2004 and 2007 both 1.4tdi and the pattern of ownership is common to both of them even though one has 80k and the other 160K. Both have 5 tyres and there isn't a matching pair to be seen anywhere with the resulting slightly off steering. When you look at the MOT history they both had multiple fails for things I would have been embarassed about. When checking through the low mileage one I had to spend a load of time on the rear drums because some muppet had their gun set to "It's going in no matter what angle it's at"

I think the low usage,limited full heat cycles, drivers with limited experience(we were all like that once) and very little mechanical knowledge/sympathy all add up.

Somewhere I have a photo of the new owner driving off in it, white smoke trailing behind it . . . slightly lopsided due to the broken front spring . . . being careful on braking as the other half didn't notice the seized front brake as she never braked hard enough . . .

Never had an issue with a VW Polo since

On our low mileage one the onwers said there was a creaking/rubbing noise, they genuinely had no idea one side was missing a complete coil.

The other was an auction purchase and it had rad weld in the expansion tank, I had assumed we would be pulling the head. I guess it was lucky I hadn't seem before buying because I wouldn't have bought it but it turns it had a leaky hose that had been repaired. I had managed to track down the previous owner from the log book.

Clealry these are common Polo issue no matter what the vintage is

Well the parts from Auto doc arrived in about 10 days , their warehouse/fulfillment centre must be some size !

I have the cambelt to do as well .visually it's ok but we have no idea when it was last changed , will splash out on a water pump too ,

2 cam belts if it's the 3 cylinder Polo although I'm sure you would have noticed!

Well just an update ,just had a mot retest today and it passed .....
I took the thermostat out and tested it ,seemed ok I changed thecoolant temp sensor , the only time it seems to get to temperature is sat in traffic or idling , normal driving it the gauge sits down the bottom around 70 degrees @optima21 says that normal anyway .
Changing the cam belt and water pump was fiddly to say the least . Obviously thehaynes manual guys did it with the engine out !
Just have the plastic thermostat housing to change as it had a tiny crack in it ,I thought it was just the o ring seal as it was distorted but no .new one ordered from auto doc
So good news another old ,(well by today's standards,) car saved for at least another year

Mrs Robo had an old Polo, she is not mechanically minded, I found a pin hole in one of the brake flexy hoses so told her I would have to replace it, she said "can you wrap some tape round it for now"
