Old school dynamo

Hi

I have an old fordson major v8 that I am building . I am fitting a different dynamo and was wondering what would the out put be?

Would be glad if anyone could help.

i suppose it depends on the dynamo model and will it be compatible with the regulator

I didn't even think anything about wee regulator box . Only reason I change was it was a wide belt and don't think it was working . No worry a it was exported to Africa

It's off of a mf 35 so prob be able to change regulator . All it needs to do is charge the battery. Basically

Hi, if it's an ordinary car type it will be 20 or 22 amps, if a slightly bigger one off say a Rover or Jaguar then it will be 25 to 30 amps. These figures are for 12volt, if its 24volt then I,m not sure with out looking up. There should be a number stamped into the body saying its model number C4* and voltage.

Unless you really want a dynamo an alternator is a better bit of kit, easily available and cheap.

More powerful and more reliable. Just make sure the vehicle electrics are negative earth though.

To tell the difference between a normal and higher powered Lucas dynamo is simple - look at the body. If there is a "step" in the outer casing then normal whereas higher output is same diameter along it's length. You will find the higher output were used on cars with twin headlights as well as upmarket models like Jaguars. Even a little car like Singer Chamois had the higher output item due to twin headlights.

Personally I'd do as others suggest and fit alternator

Think you'll find most standard tractor ones were only rated at 11 amp. Tractors didnt have a lot of electrics to run. If you uprate to a car spec 20amp you'll need a heavier duty regulator box. If the one you've got of the Fergie 35 is the genuine original tractor rated one you should be OK with your current regulator as long as it's working correctly.
I think the dynamos look the part more on a vintage tractor. My David Brown has been converted to alternator but I am thinking of converting it back.
How do you intend to use the tractor? If it's going to be a lot of short runs with cold starts taking a lot out of the battery an uprated dynamo or alternator may be a worthwhile upgrade. If it's going to be used as a tractor was intended, started once or twice a day and left running for long periods the small original dynamo will be adequate.

Usage of the machine is everything.
Dynamos don't seem to really charge when just idling, they need a fast idle to be effective.
If you do lots of starts, have a load of lights and/or other accessories and have it sat idling then dynamos aren't very good.
If it's started a couple of times a day, doesn't have huge electrical draws and is in proper use they're fine.

Thanks all. I was wonting to try keep looking original hard will Perkins v8 in it I know as bill says I only have 2 head light and few sides to run so not loads of draw

Or you could fit an alternator that looks like a dynamo Personally I would fit a 45 amp alternator and forget about it or a normal C40 will do the job admirably.
