Old RSJ Sizes

Assistance required.....

We need to connect into some old taper flange RSJ's. We've measured their overall size at 457 high x 180mm wide. So 18" x 7". I need to know the 'propper' dims of the beam to be able to specify the connection details.
The beams were installed in the early 1900's. Does anyone have any links to any charts that might exist that has this information? No joy with our stockholders and google is not my friend.

I have pre ww2 edition of machinerys handbook, not sure if that has beams, see if i can find it....

I wonder what the tolerances were back then....

75lb per ft, web .55" flange .928, sectional area 22.09, thats working from 1950s data. looking at the remarks tho your need to know either the sectional area or the lb per foot to check correctly.

strangely enough the data from the Molesworth book doesn't tally exactly the same

Middlesborough must have been a busy old place for producing beams and sections back in the day, every old beam i've come across seems to be marked up as coming from there..

RSJ Conundrum

Hi i was looking at your posts above and i have a simular problem. I cannot find any dimension for a RSJ i am working on.
Is there anychance you can send me the spec by email as they are quite difficult to determine dimensions from the photo?
