old record vice jaws repair

just trying to remove the vice jaws off a elderly record vice
quick release type one, i presume they will be whitworth
after having to drill one out not a chance of getting it loose impact driver punch etc the screws are a long taper think cheese head but with taper about 10mm long any ideas if you can buy the screws or not i have seen jaws on flebay but a £30 a bit dear any body any suggestions please

The screws will be available from Record but undoubtably won't be cheap ! An engineers merchant will be able to get them.

may have to have a rethink was trying to turn the jaws round they are well worn but the holes are not centered so may just re-drill the jaws then get some cap screws to suit but they don't want to come out at all

Can't remember what thread they are, but not whitworth. they are quite a fine thread. could be B.S.F.as mentioned with a long slow taper.

i welded the jaws back on my vice today.

only a few spot welds to hold them in place. they can be chiseled off if you need to remove.

that sounds a bit like it the bolt that hold the quick release leaver on is whitworth this is a very old vice been in family over 60/70 years now

i welded the jaws back on my vice today.

only a few spot welds to hold them in place. they can be chiseled off if you need to remove.

that will be last resort but jaws are steel vice is cast

cheated for now

cheated for now just bought this £20on buy it now and 8 quid postage
new jaws on the bay are about £20 ish so will get round to sorting it later
i think i will just turn them round most of the top has been ground away over the years with angle grinders so will just tack them on the ends screw holes are off set and i need a vice anyway to hold the other one while i drill out the screws the new one is a swivel one that is better for me only in a small ish shed well 8.5 x12.5ft

Can't expect too much for that price, but it does have a lever swivel. The swivel on my chinese job has locking nuts...A pain at times.

Record steel on one side of vice and no 38 on the other the bolt that hold the quick release cover on according to my thread gauge is whitworth so all bits derusted cleaned up jaws turned round bottom to top so i now have a flat top and edge put back together so will mig it later
after i grind the ends up a bit more and V prep it ground the anvil bit flat been used to strike a ARC on many times over the years spent most of it's life outside bolted to a metal bench

cheapest one i found on fley bay as you say looks a lot of vice for the money good price on postage as well he has another 10 say on auction for sale

there is a record swivel and that's a £150 plus £25 postage so makes it look cheap

Think I bought the same vice at a car show a few years ago at Ripley Castle. I remember it being really cheap in French packaging.
There's a cast L shaped bracket that the main screw thread runs though. The cast bracket broke within minutes of using the vice when I tightened the jaws up fairly tight the first time

Hope you fare better with yours.

bought on paypal if it breaks it will go back through under fleabay rules if it lasts 30 days it will be ok for me
going to mount the other one on to a 2ft x2ft piece of 1/8 plate screwed to
4 bits 6in x 2in with a length of 2x2 under the centre so i can clamp it on to my workmate
when not in use vice come off goes under bench workmate folds up
bit short of space in my shed so any metal work is in the garden also it will all go in the car
