Back end of last year my 12yr old lawnmower needed attention. I was going to buy a new one this year but instead I have decided to repair the thing I had an old oil drum which I cut up into square sections for practice strips. Anyway this Saturday had a great day messing about repairing it. Works a treat now. The welding looks a mess but it is gassless mig after all plus im only a novice but enjoying it.

I am pleased with the result as it is solid and has been given a new lease of life. Painted the chasis with some black paint I had spare and give the underneath a coat of engine oil. Cut three big lawns on Sunday.

my father in law suggested i weld some metal teeth on the front as it reminded him of the programme Robot wars

I quite like it as it is, it gives it a rustic edge to it. Care and neatness didnt come into it.

Remember to take the grass from the underside of the mower when you are finished it will stop it rotting. A blast with body shoot or stone chip may help keep it from rusting a lot longer.

Nice repair job...i kind of like the rustic look personally,ive got to make a new handle for ours as the factory fit wafer thin tube one has flexed that much its snapped more than once and been welded back together!

now strip the paint off the rest off it and run welds in all directions to give it the terminator look

Cool, mowers should be ran until the engine is so dead that you cannot ressurect them any more, then their twitching carcass must be picked clean of useful things to fix the replacement in a few years. Theres always the people saying "just throw it away", but a few welds later and itll be good till the motor is dead. Recycling at its very best!

Ive got a 1962 bernard self propelled pedestrian mower with a old sidevalve engine I keep patching up that someone asked me to take the tip one day, its been welded like yours on the pan, has a handle I think is worse than bigjoe's, and requires a knack to get it to start when cold. My mrs hates it because it gets belligerant when she tries to start it and backfires and snatches the pull cord back, and it spits bricks or stones out the side rather than stopping but it'll cut anything, and it lives near a couple of sewn together ride on lawn tractors, including the one with a 2stroke motor in place of the briggs, and the one with a piston/liner out of a dead 750 kawasaki motorcycle

Gave the engine a neded light strip down, clean and service before assembly. It has always been a good mower, never let me down. 12 months ago I would not have had a clue how to repair it. it was the enjoyment factor I got from it and the money I have saved from buying a new mower that's appealing.

The mower is an old Mountfield deck but had a Qualcast sticker on it from new. This has given me a project to design and custom build a new deck for a laugh
