Old Landrovers ??

Been considering this for a while about getting a fixer upper but are these just going for stupid money these days or what ??

Even ones with no interior or a rotten chassis are going for over £1000 ?!!?

Obviously over here they are like hens teeth, but where would ppl suggest looking for one to fix up ?

It's the time of year that doesn't help. Even old bangers go for silly money in the winter. Have you tried the for sale pages on the Landrover forum's? Preloved. EBay could be worth a shot.

You won't get much of any kind of land rover for £1000. Up you budget to about £2500 for something reasonable. I got a 1986 110 in September for £2350 full year mot. So far have put new heater blower motor and new heater matrix in it, and new 75 amp alternator, new brake master cylinder, new clutch master and slave. Still need ignition lock steering column shroud and all new door locks. Then new seats and new doors but she'll do for the winter.

I've been thinking the same recently, picked up a series 2 last year as a long term project for 250 quid from a local bloke, similar condition ones on ebay seem to be going for 3 times that at the moment! Been on the look out for an mot failure disco as an engine donor but even these seem to be going for a fair bit at the moment. As someone else mentioned i think it's probably to do with winter, i'll probably wait till spring when people are trying to flog them on and hopefully see the prices drop

You're obviously new to Land Rovers, they don't have much of an interior to start with!

Pick up a few LR mags and have a look through the adverts, plenty of used ones both private and dealers, prices depend on condition not age.

They are a lot of money even when in terrible condition.
You will spend a fortune getting something that requires a lot of wiring, welding, parts (mostly they're cheap but there are times when you need decent bits if you want them to last) and will occupy a huge amount of your time - do not underestimate how much of a project they all are.

Happily I have the van to keep me occupied for 12-18 months but then I will need to fill my project space

I've bought a few in recent years but they are certainly climbing.

I bought S3 109 Diesel Hartop for £400 about 2 years a go, runs well brakes all work but ideally needs a chassis. I only use it round the fields anyway.
My eldest lad (11) bought a 90 scrapper that needed an engine for £250 and we found an engine for £100. Again it will never be road legal and it's rough but he bought with his own money.
I very recently bought 2 S3 88' Diesels one for £275 and the other for £320, they are both rough but I could probably get one out of the 2, the one we make is for my youngest lad (9). These 2 make my 109 look like a minter.
So they are about, it will all depend on what level of work you want to do.Even some of the road legal £1500+ jobs are proper old nails
All the ones I've bought have required trailering home,if you've got your own trailer and a suitable tow vehicle then that just becomes part of the adventure.The last 2 have been a mare to collect as they had been sat in fields for years, brakes siezed etc.

All of my Series vehicles have come from ebay.
If you are happy to do some proper work and want something to keep then the ideal vehicle is one that is complete and has a reasonable body/engine but needs a chassis. You could then put a galvanised chassis under it. The problem is once you start doing it becomes very hard not to repair/refurb loads of other stuff and before you know it you've spent £3K+

These look like stupid money but try searching for a VW camper where scrappers make £2K+, used to be able to buy these for £50-200

Once you'd owned a cheap land Rover and had to do all the work required to get it to even an acceptable standard then you say "never again"
They rot, corrode, rot, corrode and rot even more. So you can be left with a pile of mechanicals that are cheap anyway and searching for decent bulkhead / alloy bits to go on a new chassis as you realise the original you thought just needs a few plates has very little sound metal left. I can go on and on but basically a cheap land Rover is going to be a money pit hence decent demand the high prices. Even then you have to be careful that you don't fall into the trap of assuming just because nice and shiney with full MOT it will last until next MOT without needing work every spare moment of your time.
If I was ever going go own another (very doubtful after 3 x Range Rovers, Disco, Defender and 5 x Series) then replacement galv chassis would be the absolute min spec I'd consider. Anything else then add the cost of one to your budget as you will probably need one at some time or other if you intend keeping the vehicle. I often hear people say things like "I can easily weld it up" but I assure you that you'd soon change your mind and lust after a galv'd item.

That's not generally the word one hears uttered. I've heard them called many things by owners, (it's amazing how creative some folk can be with their language on occasion), but can't recall charming being one.

My '96 Discovery has been great - as a learning experience!

Welded all around, head gasket done, clutch bearing replaced... Done loads of things that I've not done before, and learn through every experience.
Next to tackle is maybe a swivel ball refurb kit thingy....or simply get tracking done!

I've only owned 6 and found the cheapest to run/keep was a TD4 Freelander.

Discoverys are good. I find them easy to work on. Get parts for. I'm lucky to have a td5 one. My third lol. Freelanders are good. Had three. I really need to stop soon. :-?

I've had 2, the petrol engined one lived up to the reputation and blew a head gasket

The mechanic that drove my disco to my house when i brought it said stay away from the petrol freelander

My dad wanted one, but I told him to not get any land rover .. He's got away with barely maintaining his '95 corolla, i don't think a landy would like that.

Just curious are you anything to do with the Simmonite sisters who used to race Landrovers what with your forum name.A guy i worked for used to race landrovers and i remember him talking about the Simmonites and getting beat by them
