Old diesel model engines???

Not strictly welding, well not welding but I was wondering if....

Does anybody else on here have a "fascination" for want of a better word with old model diesel glow plug engines???


I've got two PET OS 099 engines possibly a Mk2, but certainly a Mk1, and I need gaskets for them, the rear cam, cylinder base and cylinder head, any sources?!

One's mounted to an old "Griffin & George" science kit, those of you the same age as me or older should remember them well , that's a turbine configuration demonstrating air power...

I just want to restore it to its previous joy and need help...
It hadn't been looked after too well and upon dismantling to remove all the gunk the gaskets all split and broke so I need replacements...

Diesel glowplug engines is a contradiction in terms, diesels wouldn't have a glow plug.

You could make your own gaskets from a suitable thickness gasket paper.

Piccys would be great, It may well be that you can source a gasket from ebay that fits a similar model (currently ive only seen 2 different types of exhaust gasket and ive had approx 6 engines car and plane. If you are thinking of a gasket for between the head and crankcase then usually these are a thin copper shim and not actually gasket paper.

Im probably miles off, im referring to nitro engines... but still pictures would be great! If in doubt ignore me

Eh? Last time I looked at a diesel engine they did. On my old r/c planes the glowplug was used for starting and then disconnected, after which the engine kept running. No spark plug, so I'm guessing they were 2-stroke diesels

Glow engines run on nitro fuel and use a glow plug that is started with a battery then combustion keeps the glow plug hot.

Sounds like a subtle difference to me Surely if the glowplug was that hot the mixture would ignite on a random basis, irrespective of the amount of compression?

Well that's how they work, it's only going to ignite when fuel is present and they run so fast that the plug stays red hot.

The diesels work on compression ignition, so just the heat of compression cause ignition.

As said it's a PET OS 099 1.6cc engine from what I can figure out, but I'm not sure if it's a Mk1 or Mk2, it's definitely not a Mk3 as the crank case to the rear has only three screws, not four as on the Mk3...

The duct has the engine at one end, as you can see , and a small motor/dynamo at the other with a fan blade about a third/quarter of the diameter of the start...

It's an old "Griffin & George" science kit to demonstrate how air is a substance and not just an empty void...

Sadly the engine was in a poor state when I received it and I'm waiting on the second coming back from a friend...
The only major problem was the gaskets, it hadn't been cleaned or run for some time so what fuel/castor oil that was left soaked in eventually broke them apart or allowed them to be compressed...

The rear crank case gasket seems ok, it looks like a very thin "mica" film so hopefully I can get away with that one as it's nearly impossible to get hold of after the Mk3 engine was brought out...


I'm speaking to a company in the US that can make custom parts to see if they'll make me a batch of gaskets to keep with it for the future...


Edit: After a couple of emails it looks to be a Mk2, the Mk1 only had two screws on the head, so I might be getting somewhere...

Not sure if this will be the gasket you need then (or if your looking for exhaust gasket) Check the measurements. I have used the seller before and they provide good service.

Might even have one floating about somewhere in my toolbox I can stick in an envelope FOC.
As far as rear crankcase I have used some of the loctite liquid casket (cant remember it it was blue or black.. ones not suitable) successfully to seal a partially leaking gasket.

Thanks for the offer but sadly this engine has no exhaust...

Some versions did but this one doesn't, I'm thinking it was a development between the Mk1 and Mk3 before they worked out all the problems...

I'll ask though, worth a try...

I would have thought thin paper gaskets for the most part (silicone would probably do).... cant remember the heads... been a long time since I played with them

looks like a glow engine so methanol, castor & nitro rather than diesel as fuel source

I used to look longingly at those in the shop window[glo plug motors], I built loads of planes, my dad wouldn't have it I needed a new engine so I had his ED and mills diesel. The ED was from the 30's and had the cylinder copper plated before the war, the mills was old when he was given in in the 30's. I did some times get the ED to start after a few hours flicking the prop, never ever managed to get the Mills started! My little brother got into planes and was bought an OS glow plug engine, couple of flicks and away it went. If you really need gaskets get some gasket paper and make them. Isn't the difference between glo plug and diesel, apart from glo plug, the fuel; glo plugs run a methanol mix and diesels use an ether mix.

I've figured it's a 5% to 15% nitro mix with a minimum 20% castor so shouldn't be a problem fuel wise...

The difficulty is the gasket between the cylinder and body, it's about 2mm to 3mm thick and very hard...

I may have had some luck, I'm considering high temp silicone like on my Stihl chainsaw for the head as that gasket is quite narrow...

diesel works best warm, heat from compressing air ignites the fuel. glow plug are common in diesel engines to get them started. ie warms up cold diesel to start the compression process. glow plugs are not used for ignition in running engines. some vehicle/plant have a glow plug light to let you know when glow plug is warm enough to try to start.
