old british drill bit brands

Hi all, i know the drill bit question comes up quite often but i'm after something a bit more specific, i'm going to be investing in some drill bit sets after xmas and was set on giving my wallet a hammering with dormer bits, but when i checked the prices on sherwood and presto bits i found they are quite a bit cheaper, so my question is are they what they what they used to be? the sets i found if they are, seem good value

Look on ebay for the presto bits,you'll find the same ones a bit cheaper thand RGD Tools...£5 cheaper I think the last time i looked.

I wouldn't worry too much about your first drill set, by the time you have need to use all of them, you'll have broken/lost... so will have replaced a few. You'll also get to know the common ones you use.


I buy 1mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm, 6mm, 8 and 12mm in boxes of ten, as those I use the most, so tend to got lost, broken etc

trawl round a few carboot sales or autojumbles and u can sometimes pick up loads of random size drill bits up for peanuts. i have full sets i use for general use and sets i just use on the lathe or pillar drill . all theloose random sizes i use at work or making things that arent size critical saves using the expensive ones out of sets if u break them and have to pay full price

I have a set of Guhring cobalt bits from J&L or MSC as they are now called, they seem to be as good as my Presto bits. The Guhring set is £61 but I see they currently have a set of Hertel bits on offer for £48.95 which is a good deal for quality kit.

They are but they are quite good.

I buy sherwood sets of drills then as has been said buy packs of 10 in the sizes I use

I have a load of odd size guhring ones that my father in law gets for me from under the wing jigs at Airbus. (He works for a contract cleaning company).

The waste there is phenomenal, he usually picks packets up that have been thrown on the floor with one bit taken out and the rest of the packet just discarded amongst the swarf.

They are odd sizes (Imperial mainly) but are fine for general use.

Got a set of those I keep for 'best' so not used them hard but they seem fine to me.

They seem to be on Ebay a fair bit. You used to be able to judge ebay sellers by their feedback but now they can manipulate the feedback it means very little.

But you just gotta check out the description and price of these bad boys... lol

I've a set of split point Clarkson Osborne's (http://www.clarkson-osborn.com/clarkson/index2.html) I use for most work, quality is great for the price (About 45-50 quid for a set of 1-13mm IIRC), then a case full of cheap chinese bits that get reground and used for general use and abuse, along with a cheap set of carbide multiconstruction bits with the tips ground for metal cutting for tough jobs.
Then I just buy odds and sods of better drills when there's a difficult job that needs it, or when they come up cheap - I dropped on 5 brand new Dormer worm pattern TiAlN coated beauties at a tool shop recently, in with all the mixed drill bit bargain box from when he gets job lots in, 20 pence each, haven't used them but at that price it was like robbery!
