Old arc welding torch

While sorting through some boxes of old welding things today I came across this old torch and wondered if anyone new much about them.

Handle seems like a bakelite sort of stuff.

They were still in use much later than the 40's Heavy industry used them a lot, 600 amp. I gave one to my lad last year, I believe the handle will be tufnol, held on by a pin of the same material.

A place I worked at in the 80s used them and other similar vintage kit, had the welding machines to match as well!, there they were mainly used on narrowboat building with iron powder electrodes as thick as your finger to lay down a lot of metal in one pass.

Iron powder rods!! Brings back memories that does...

did the same building Narrow boats with the iron powder rods.....had a deisel powered Hummel....it used to sing....wish I had it now.......
(gonna build a barn in the middle of a field with a 100m x 440v extension lead)......hahaha.....
was shown how to pull them rods to get better mileage......hahaha......
