I normally get my oils via Smiths Allans

normally 20l at a time and Super Universal Tractor Oil 15W-40 STOU SUTO I have no idea what STOU SUTO is

is there any difference between normal 15w40 Diesel Engine Oil

SUTO is an oil that is "acceptable" in an engine, ok in a tractor transmission and hydraulic system. It was a bit of a farmers one stop shop oil if you like. Its got additives that work with wet brakes and clutch`s

Cheers for that Bob yes i was wondering if as its a one stop shop maybe a dedicated diesel 15w40 might be a better long term oil to start using

We used it in everything for years but its a bit expensive compared to a straight grade, we now keep a barrel of each .

Cheers, I think I am becoming my father his hang up was every engine needed Castrol lol, although I am beginning to wonder about some oils that are trying to be everything in our toys though. For the sake of saving a few quid

The various grades, specs, detergents etc now are a minefield. When did 20w50 mineral oil stop being the 'go to' for everything?

in modern engs the engineering finish is to tight for it....beside the newer oils cope with much higher lub temps...

When I worked for an Oil Distributor & Castrol Agent, I think Castrol were the first to bring out this sort of Oil - and branded it "Multiplant".

We used to sell barrels of the stuff to the Road Building Contractors who loved the stuff - because it saved them a fortune in knackered machines due to stopping site workers putting Hyraulic Oil in engines or Engine Oil in Hydraulics (or Gear Oil /transmission fluid in engines etc).
More pricey per litre, but only one lubricant meant no way to screw up )

We run a 10/40 semi synthetic in eveything Frank, not saying its right but we have common rail and old school diesels running on it with most showing 2-300k on the clocks, same oil in the trucks and machines most are over 500k and the old Foden I pensioned off had clocked up1.6 million miles, one of the Massey`s with a Perkins Phaser has clocked up 15,000 hours in forestry and it doesn't get any harder on kit than that. A man told me that api oil specs upgrade every year and that you cant actually buy an oil bad enough for a motor if its a few years old, most of the bargain drums of oil are a one/two year old spec they are trying to offload, nothing wrong with it other than its not latest spec.

I use a 15/40 mineral oil in all tractor,loader and generator engines apart from a couple of newer ones with dpf,s. I've got several over 13,000 hours and a generator at 21,000 hours. There's nothing wrong with mineral oils.

Your man was right. If you look at the API specs (I do if it’s an engine I’ve not looked at before. Habit) they always exceed what you need. Can’t remember the last time I actually put an oil back and found a different one because it wasn’t high enough spec

I have a somewhat dated book from a lube company when they used to give away stuff, which lists almost every plant machinery, agri and HGV. Has all the oils and fluids as well as quantities and in some cases the filters. Only the fram numbers as they must have sponsored it.

Nowadays you can probably get a pdf but I find the book handier.

That said, the intervals are huge. Saw a scania optidrive thing the other day and the oil for the box claimed 1000000km. I wouldn’t push that far but that’s what it said.

You can "over-egg" it with oil spec though.
Engines are designed around the oil of their time and availability.
Some engines designed around a low API-spec (CC/CD) and/or a monograde can bore-glaze, lose compression and turm into an oily smoky mess if you run a modern high spec Synthetic in them.

I tend to stick with the spec the Mfr lists for the engine, and change it at the advised hours.

I put whatever 15w40 is on bulk offer at the local fleet suppliers. Never had a problem yet.

must day I did for a while use gb oils 15w40 intercooler and that was good stuff, but no one sells it in single barrels
