oiled sills ..now need to weld , will it catch fire

i doused my sills with engine oil least week after a tidy up on the bodywork , ive not found a small hole on the floor where it butts up the sill

what do you think about the oiling ...im thinking engine oil will smoke rather than go up ?

yeah oil usually produces think smoke when hot!

i would be carful and have someone fire watch with a co2 extinguisher dont use dry powder it will cause the sills to rot if you have to use it.
if there is any lose debis in the sill it will act as a wick and possibly will set on fire

i think theres a large grommet close to it , will keep a close eye on things

What I would do is cut a larger hole than the rust hole you have (say 2" bigger than the rust hole), this will get rid of the rust. Make up your patch to fit, then at the end of the day clean as far into the sill in every direction you can with rags to remove the oil. Pull out ALL the rags (or you will have a fire!) then clean a few inches into the sill with a rag soaked in thinners or panel wipe. THEN LEAVE OVERNIGHT TO DRY!

This will have removed the oil close to where you will be welding so should minimise the risk of fires. But, again firewatch and extinguisher ready for when you do the welding.
