Oil Filter

Just ordered a three legged one (shown by Brightspark on page 1) I'm sure it will be OK. Thanks for everyones input

i used to have a special tool for removing them...

It came in a tescos value screwdriver pack, and was a spike on a screwdriver handle.

Only failed one day when the plastic handle snapped off. Now i have reverted to the big screwdriver method - hasn't failed yet.

Nearly came unstuck though on a mates renault - the oil filter was that small that I only just had enough space to get the screwdriver in without hitting the threaded bit it goes on to.

As above also, smear of new engine oil from the finger onto it, never had one leak and i can normally get my own ones off again with a good grip on it.

bit of petrolium jelly on the seal,spin the filter on,when it touches further half to 3/4 turn

next time they can usually be removed by hand

Depends on the rubber compound, it won't affect nitrile, which is what oil filter seals are made from. Natural, EPDM, Latex, will be affected by any hydrocarbon oil.

Well yes that's probably a very good point, but when I'm changing oil filters I normally have a gallon of nice clean fresh slippery oil to hand, so I always smear that around!

I worry about the engine running 'dry' whilst the new oil finds it's way around the system, so I always fill the new filter with oil before I fit it on. That way when it starts up the rest of the system is not completely starved while the pump is filling the filter. There is normally some that takes a while to soak in, so I just spread that round the seal...

Only possible of course if the filter is the right way up, I only have one vehicle where thats possible. My Xantia is the worst, removing the filter always dumps oil all over the front of the engine and sump.

Yeah you are righ there! You can fill the filter and leave it to soak in for a while and avoid it pouring out when you fit it, but then it's not really full is it? So the engine will still run dry for a while! Arghh I HATE that!

Probably. The pump and oil galleries are still full and such is the pumping capacity of automotive oil pumps that it would only be a few seconds at most that there would be no or low pressure in the bearings. You can always disable the engine from firing until it's been cranked to oil pressure on the starter.

My Jeep had a crappy right angle adapter that always leaked. Oil all over when you removed it.

I installed a remote oil filter right behind the bumper. Was able to use a larger, standard filter. No more mess

I learned the screwdriver trick years ago. I use silicon spray on the gasket.

Also, check that half the old gasket is not still stuck to the engine

DONT FILL FILTERS BEFORE FITTING

any crud(no matter HOW clean you think you are) will bypass the filter and cause problems
