Oil extractor

I am thinking about buying one of these. Are they worth buying. Would save a lot of hassle as my car is pretty low etc. What are peoples thoughts

I have a couple, my most recent one is a Mityvac air powered and it works really well. Uses way less air than my old Sealey one ans sucks better. The beauty of it is no mess, no scrabbling around on the floor.

I am not wanting to spend a fortune just for a few cars. I was thinking something like the Pela 6ltr extractor. They are around 40 notes

I've had a Pela 14 litre job for years, wouldn't be without it [I'm too old to be lying on the ground with hot oil running up my arm ].

Isn't the problem with these that the crud in the sump isn't flushed out through the drain plug but left there as the extractor goes in the dipstick hole that doesn't usually point at the lowest part of the sump

I was think that because their is no chances of any bit to run out so to speak. I won't really miss that much oil I wouldn't think.

They are the mechanics version of welding thick plate with no edge prep.

I wouldn't bother unless the sump plug was knacked and Loctite in

I use one. I always use it after a decent run. If there is any residue stuck so well to the bottom of the sump that has not been stirred up into solution when i drive about before hand, then its of no concern to me anyhow.

If i were to buy again, id get an air powered one, rather than the manual pump one. I like to poke the tube about a bit at the end, and the manual one looses vac the moment its not sucking oil.

I have a Pela and brilliant piece of kit. My Smart didn't have a sump plug hence vacuum was only way to draining. Eventually the sump started to heavily rust (common problem with them) so I bought a new version with drain plug. Before change over i sucked all the oil out and then removed old sump. Pleasantly surprised to find all that was left would just about fill an egg cup. At nearly 70,000 miles there was no sludge at the bottom either despite only ever having the oil previously sucked out.

I have a smart car and they don't have sump plugs as standard , so have used one a lot . When using synthetic oil the crud in the sump seems minimal. I have changed sumps in the past and welded in a drain plug and fitted an quick release valve which avoids the oil up the arm issues.

I have the pela too my very ordinary car is a bit low and the pela makes it easy , better make sure the engine is very warmed up as this improves the flown thru the pipes . makes an oil change so much easier that I don't avoid it anymore

Main dealers have used them for years to comply with HSE requirements and they always work well, they work well on boat engines, truck engines, and almost any type of engine so get one if you prefer them.

Just as easy for me to drop a car on the ramps and remove the drain plug.

I have a 6L sealy one & it's one of the most useful tools I have in my workshop. As well as sucking oil it gets used for starting syphons (saves a mouthful of fuel), bleeding brakes, cleaning out fuel filter housings plus many other uses.

The Pela pumps are brilliant, DO NOT BUY A SILVERLINE ONE! being a tight git I did and surprise surprise it's rubbish, it won't hold a vacuum you have to pump continuously to get it to work! I should have spent a bit more

They were selling them at my local Lidl (i rate Lidl tools),didnt buy one as i have enough tools alrady and i love laying on the cold ground with oil dripping down my arm
