Oil-Embedded Bronze Flanged Sleeve Bearings

Good afternoon,

I wonder if anyone can help find a UK supplier of some imperil bearings. The flange thickness must be 3/16".

My local supplier and others on the web have the bearings in stock, but the flange is much thinner. My alternative is getting them from America.!

Spacing collar and a longer sleeve to the bearing ?
Or you could make something up and babbitt the thing ?

That would be the simplest solution. The ones from, for example, Simply Bearings are longer than you need. A washer behind the flange then part the bush to length.

Could you put a plain steel washer of the correct thickness under the bronze flange to make everything fit?

Alternatively, oilite material is available as bar stock so you can turn any shape of bush you need (or make just the spacer washer out of it).

Turning the stuff can be a source of smearing, or so the story goes.
Once smeared, it gets a bit reticent about maintaining the oil film, evidently.

Yes, there is an old Oilite instruction sheet showing how to do it, wanted IIRC very sharp HSS
tools, and showed pix of good and bad.

Probably online somewhere now.

A new carbide insert on a boring bar would likely suffice....

No, even with a positive rake insert, they are pretty dull compared to a ground & honed
HSS bit.
Really need to find that instruction sheet (or similar) and the close up pix of the smearing.

They have gone all modern and hi-tech and dropped HSS in favour of PCD:

Oilite Cored Bar Stock is what you want. You can then turn your own bushes

On Simply Bearings website I can find 3/4x1x1-1/4 inch but the flange is only 1/8 thick, this is the same for the 1 - 1/2 length one as well. It's irritating that you are unable to search by flange size on their website.

Pick another website (like Moore International).

Go to the horses's mouth and look at the Oilite catalogue (https://oilite.com/catalog-product-listing) to find their product reference (FF1507-01 or -01R and FF1016-04). As you say, it appears that what you want is not available on the UK market.

True, but a leetle pricey for a one off job in a garage eh ?
Ordering in a special insert, might not be able to buy a single insert, insert breaks
partially thru the job, etc.

The C-shape insert is good for boring, facing and OD turning.

Give the thing a lick over with a diamond wheel, perhaps ?
