Oil cooled transformer arc set

I have a customer looking for one, are they still available?

I see that Pickhill (Oxford) don't make them any more.

Due to the customer, used is not an option, it has to be new.
It also has to be a transformer type oil cooled.

Don't ask, long story, and very complicated.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
A Google search has only revealed used units.

I need a reliable source to quote the customer, and be sure that when I get their PO, the kit will still be there.
I also doubt that a South African supplier would be suitable.

I know, I don't want much, well, my customer actually, however, they are a very important customer, not only to us, but to the UK too!

Are Oxford/Pickhill still doing refurbished sets? If it has been factory refubished by the original manufacturer could it still be supplied as new as you would have an invoice from Pickhill.

pickhill no longer do welders now they just sell and repair generators

Thales or some other "defence contractor" are involved in this somewhere...and this contract involves the OSA......

None of the above, but, I really can't say!
It's only a 1 off for a local site, but we try to look after them.

Did not say they were good good but after a trawl through Google it was the only new one I came across, we have 2 x Oxfords 1 x BOC oil cooled welders how old I don't know they just keep working even after all day welding Structural steel

Why oil cooled transformer.
Surely there are better options readily available. I know those machines were bomb proof but this day and age there are inverter based machines that can produce the same out put current on better power consumption and higher duty cycles.

That is what they have, and that is what they want!

They have had bad experiences with modern inverter sets, however, these units may, have been value engineered rather than the quality of the old sets.

I agree with you norm My perception of oil cooled was that the duty cycle was 100% or near
The only down side to inverters are a lot more to go TU, especially if somewhere of the beaten track.
The Tonka (sorry Tonco) ones don't seem to be any better.
Just a thought poor\ erratic electric supply

That's simple they have been engineered cheaply, not enough metal surface area / oil volume.

For example the 250A unit is said to weight 54Kg, a 250A Oxford probably weights in at 100Kg+

No point in them being oil cooled then, is there?
as my old buzz box could give near 30/40%,
I increased it by adding my own fan, out of a fan heater -----
Then they brought out the TURBO version.

Specific request for an oil-cooled transformer, South African supplier might not be suitable. I am guessing this welder is destined for somewhere hot and either dusty or humid, with a lot of voltage fluctuations, perhaps a fairly remote location in the Middle East or Africa.

Fan-cooled machines can quickly get filled with dust, which is liable to go unnoticed, and not easy to clean out. By contrast, it is very simple to brush dust from the outside of an Oxford/Pickhill welder.

Even small amounts of dust can restrict airflow and lead to over-heating of electronic components. Inverters don’t like dust, or humidity, or voltage spikes.

In almost any small town throughout the world, there will be somebody who can re-wind a transformer. Quite possibly this welder is required for a country that has no repair facilities at all for inverters.

I’ve worked in several places where an oil-cooled transformer would be the most sensible choice. Unfortunately I am not able to suggest a supplier.

Thank you norm, it could have been a possibility if it were a larger output say 300A ish!
