Oil cooled arc welder problems

Hi
I have an old Cytringan Minor Oil Cooled Arc Welder which powers up and buzzes but will not weld. The low voltage side is reading 25 volts instead of 50 and the high around 46 volts instead of 80 but no amps. Has anyone got an idea as to the problem.

Sounds like a bad connection on one of your crimps on your welding leads. Check them. Could b internal between the brass treaded taps and the transformer there may b a breakage. Some of the lift and turn knobs on them oil welders eejits turn them with out lifting bending the copper selectors inside. Try it on all the settings

Can you add more info to the no amps?
Are any primary tapping correctly selected 220v or 415v if applicable.(or similar voltages).

Is it AC or DC? Are you checking the voltages under load?

As above is that measurements open circuit and measured with a digital multi meter?
Without a load the readings can sometimes be misleading.

lift the transformer out on a hoist or similar and check all the conections and tappings from transformer

Thanks for the advice guys - funny thing is that the second time I switched it on the voltage was correct and it welded on all the settings. Welds using Lincoln rods were excellent - very smooth. So I assume I have solved the problem in some way. I will check it over though re the advice I have been given.
