I get most of my material for projects and the like from Pheonix steel in Hebburn.
But for practice try calling into some location fabrication company's you might find a nice one that will sell you bits of scrap, sometimes for a few quid to go in the tea pot.

I work in an large engineering company with a large fab shop , but everything has to be done by the book and what not.Thought the majority of companies will be the same.I get on well with the machine shop team leader , ill ask him tomorrow see what he says

Try your local scrap yard. The cuttings from most of the fabrication shops end up there and if you get friendly with some of the staff they will usually let you take stuff away for the scrap value, sometimes free! Then when you've finished practicing with it you can bring it back for scrap and get your money back!

i doubt that verry much they wouldnt give u the steam of there sh ,,it if they had a use for it

one of the places near me is a steel supplier and they keep the offcuts and I asked if I could have a look through them, at first they looked at me as though I was mad and just kept asking what measurements I wanted but when I explained they let me browse and find what looked useful

They let me wander the scrap piles and the offcuts in the stock sheds and, providing I don't need anything cutting, they sell it to me for a mark up on their scrap price. Getting stuff cut can work out expensive so I usually find what is close to what I need and make do
Basically talk to people, if they see you are genuine they don't mind helping and at the the end of the day they all want to make money.

Why so hard to find the metal? If I walked around where I am I'm sure I can find metal for welding practice before the pikeys have been.

Honestly its no big thing but you need to knock on doors and tell them what your after and why. If you called here and said "have you any scrap?" I should send you packing, come and say " I wonder if you might help me?" " I am looking for some metal off cuts for practicing my welding" and I should likely send you away with armfuls. You need a relatively high amount of M/Steel scrap to make it worth a proper dealer visiting in a waggon to collect as a one off or be producing worthwhile amounts to have a contract collection. Think on also as its half a day to take a smaller load in yourself BUT and its a big one for me people coming on site nosing around and mentioning the words "scrap" are viewed with suspicion and no small amount of hostility at times on security grounds so bear this in mind (first three things people hear and first three things they see are the most important)

I use my local blacksmiths, very friendly and have built up a good rapport over the years, I get offcuts of round, box, tube, square and flat bar and when needed I can get stock at any lengths I require for projects etc. I only ever get charged £5.00 for an armful of offcuts and charged at cost for any stock I need.

If you can go over to Blaydon call in to Wilbar Eng, ask to see Ronnie and see if he will let you rumage in the skip or sort you some stuff out, great people, maybe tell him Stan from GTC sent you, that should double the Price. Now its not the easiest place to find, its off Patterson street right opposite Factory road junction. Franklin Trading Est. There is a steel galv fence and a gate , There are company names on a sign board, Wilbar is at the top. Factory is down on your left.

I use my local metal supply company. They letme raid the bins for anything I want I return for £2 I the tea pot. I came away with a boot full of aluminium yesterday and a load of 60x40 3mm that they cut up for me free as well.
In return I buy my new metal of them for all my projects. Currently building a welder trolley with new steel to practice my TIG.
If you get friendly with the supplier and don't take the mick you generally find they are really helpful. It's all about building a relationship.

Decided to grow some balls today , went to ask my boss to see if i could get some steel , he used to be a fabricator and then shop floor manager , so he was all up for the idea of a draftsman learning to weld ...anyway getting some plate cut 300 x 150 x 5 thick getting about 12 cut . Think im sorted from now on . Thanks for the suggestions , will probably use them in the future.

Not worth faffing about with scrap, you might have to spend too much time and effort / cost preping it. Just order black mild strip, 3 x 20, 5 x 25 ect, and cut it into 150mm lengths.
When every peice is welded to every other piece you can weigh it in, and start again.
