Quick question, how do you pronounce Oerlikon? I have seen this make many times but not sure how it's pronounced, I know it's a French company but that's it! Cheers.

Cannon. Pom-poms was another name for obvous reasons. Not French though, I thought Swiss?

Originally Swiss but part of SAF Air Liquide these days.

I had an email from an Indian outfit the other day. SUPERON SCHWEISSTECHNIK (strange name for India) who make Oerlikon rods

I should imagine all the Oerlikon distributors will be really pleased by this lot sending out invites virtually saying "you can get the same rods here, only cheaper".

I always say: or (as in iron ore) -lick-on. Then again I could easily be wrong or just maybe I say it the English way like Bombardier?

Magmaweld are a Turkish outfit making rods under license from Oerlikon.

Thank you all, very informative! TechnicAl I was going to say its SAF oerlikon yes, I only ask as we had a box of 7018 rods & that was the make on them. It also says air liquid on them, two of our welders are air liquid, but I didn't realise they were part if the same company. I know oerlikon make stick welders too.

I'm looking to move from being on the tools into welding sales, I put a c.v into a Shrewsbury company so I'm trying to build up my knowledge. Thanks again!

Cemont, which were an Italian welder manufacturer, are another part of Air Liquide. I've got an idea their welders are now made in Hungary.

I wouldn't be surprised if Oelikon welders showed a resemblance to Cemont.

Swedish co. Oh-er-lick-on. Arms maker, as said, 40mm anti-aircraft guns popular in WW11. AKA Pom-Poms (nothing to do with Oz)
I use their rods for MMA, seem to be OK.

Oerlikon is still going as an engineering group, but it looks as if they sold off the welding side of the business to A.L.

You're right there, I was getting mixed up.

Bofors AA for close to medium range and the Oerlikon was for short range targets.
