Odd welds

Been doing some test welds before I weld in the foot plates for my roll cage and got some odd things happen.
I have a supermig 150 with 0.6 murex wire and argoshield
When on max heat ( last pic ) I don't get the bacon sound, it's more a flat hiss.

This is some 3mm to 1mm. I also had the same hiss happen when practising welding cage tube together.

That's what I was thinking of but couldn't remember what it was called. Thanks.
I thought it might have been because the machine wasn't feeding the wire fast enough.
I've been having some wire feed issues recently.

I don't think you can get to spray transfer at 150amps,you may still have a wire feed issue,sorry

Granted, that my machine at work is 180 amps, it has no spray button/switch option. With some tweaking of wire speed and torch distance etc, I have made it possible to acheive a spray transfer. Its a very fine line to acheive though and not practical to attempt a job specifically using this method.

Its very difficult to acheive this on my 180 amp machine, so I would imagine even more so on 150. Although the weld does indeed look to me like spray transfer.

I've got a supermig 140 and I find the same thing when using coogar5 gas. it gives me a beautiful weld, very smooth, and very hot. not sure of the relationship between volts, wire speed, gas and output amps when it comes to spray transfer. was always under the impression that you needed something bigger and better than you could run on a household supply. Perhaps the smaller 0.6 wire gives you higher voltage?

Thanks Flames! I am well and truelly still a noob myself.
Spent an hour or so messing about with some scrap tonight a I think it might just be my welding of tube that sucks so more practice is needed.

2 max on the left and a cold 1 max on the right.

The welder seemed to behave itself tonight so maybe it was just having its time of the month before.
I'll get some 0.8 and do a load more practice on some tube before I go near the car

Won't spray transfer happen at lower amperage If you're using 0.6mm wire?


with my little clarke i seem to be getting similar results but only on 0.6mm wire its more of a buzz with a really smooth flat weld on thiner stuff as above really

The last pic here was the one that was odd.
I'm thinking now it was a slight blockage in the contact tip.

I was welding on another project of mine yesterday and it started doing it again so I changed to another tip and it stopped. Could it be the tips aren't rated to a high enough amp?

The tips not suitable for high amperage? noooo, i woulden't worry 'bout that, they just do that every once and a while. A small piece of dirt etc blocking in your tip is enough to cause this...
Remember to clean out the liner too sometimes, it will solve a lot of issues!

Usually this kind of smooth weld happens too when you have a lot of Argon in the gas mixture....

ps: don't pull the torch away too fast at the end of the weld and they will look even better! do you have post gas settings?

I get the strange surface effect with my supermig140. Just knock back the wire feed speed a bit I think, and it should be fine, and look more consistent and even.

Could someone confirm that with 0.6mm wire, that we are getting spray transfer on high amperage settings with our supermigs?

No, spray transfer will occur around the 200 amps and 24,6 Volts (give or take )
