Oak floor sanding

Hello, I have 30 sq.m of oak floor to sand, some of it is quite bad due to my neglect and needs 0.5mm removed. I have a professional geared orbital sander but it's really slow on the oak.

What are your experiences of hire shop floor sanders?

Do it, you won’t regret the speed and finish of a pro drum floor sander machine, but be prepared for lots of dust, even though they have inbuilt extraction.

Murderous things to use but effective.
As Parm says dust was horrendous
note dont try putting more pressure on to remove bigger blemishes.
I can see where I did this five years later after I relaid half a 4m sq room of parquet flooring.
Such fun like sticking down millions offish fingers.
Id reccomend using Osmo non slip floor wax to finish

you want 2 items one a floor sander and you also want a belt sander as well as the floor sander will not do right up at the wall edges

as we had the belt floor sander

I had to get a corner sander to finish

It’s a long, messy and laborious job.
Great bits of kit but you need to keep it moving otherwise you will get uneven gouges in the floor.

I hired on years ago with 4 150mm orbital pads it was absolutely brilliant gave a very good finish and removed a bit of material depending on grit used, re did my floor yeast year and couldn’t find one for the life of me. Used a drum sander instead and found it quite hard to get a good finish.

I can imagine that would be an easier beast to control

I’ve just found this machine which maybe similar to what @Shiny Steve described, although only has 3 discs. I suspect this will be an easier machine to control and won’t leave gouge marks, resulting in a better finish

my nephew wanted a go of one so i watched him but advised him not to stay still and keep moving with it

In days gone by I used to buy flats in Edinburgh and renovate top-to-bottom. You haven't mentioned the age of your property or in what way the floor is damaged. If it's an old property then beware of previous owners having nailed down carpets or hardboard as underlay - all those little nails will be sitting there unseen until they get a taste of your expensive sanding belts and rip them to shreds! An initial light skim will let you see any shiny nails before they can do any damage. You can then spend many happy hours crawling round on your knees bashing them down with a punch. When it comes to sanding start off with two diagonal runs at 90 degrees to each other, and then up and down the length of the room.
If you have any doubts about it not being totally flat, then avoid using a gloss varnish as the light will highlight every dip and bump!

Most hire shops will offer rotary edge sanders which do a good job, but as mentioned will not allow you to get into the corners so a delta pad sander is useful if you're chasing perfection, My only other comment is that all the floor sanders appear to have been designed for use by people about 5' 6" tall - if you're a proper height, you'll end up with a sore back!
