Oak beams.

Got a job to look at tomorrow. Large relatively new built house. Customer is looking to have oak Beams installed externally to give the impression its timber framed. Haven't seen the spec yet. Got a few ideas for fixing them but wondering what other options you might have.

You probably know this already but use stainless steel fixings as the acid in the timber will eat through everything else.

I would set studing in resin into the masonry and bolt through timber and then finish holes with wooden slugs

Yup. That was my first thought too. My only thought tbh. Curious to see if there were any other ways.

My farthera did the same he forged some traditional s plates and the iron rods with square nuts so onthe inside of the house you had the decrotive s shape

Cheers Gaz. Just been for a look see. There not beams. There board stock similar to your link. Already got oak plugs on site so ss concrete screw's are probably the way forward. 50mm for the thick bottom boards and 30mm for the smaller uprights. Easy access and not many tricky spots.

Gaz, pretty horrible. Just dépends on the client. Old school would want decent wood. New money cares less...

Normally fake beams are only and inch or 2 thick and often not oak (due to cost and the fact they are normally covered with good old barn paint) I saw one place that had old bits of spruce used... It looked awful but they seemed proud

As an aside I saw that the local agricutural merchants are selling new French oak sleepers, 100mm x 200mm x 2400m, for £25 each!
That's around £14 a cube which is crazy for sawn oak, the cheapest I could find 20 years ago was £22 a cube with some places wanting £40.
The quality looks good as well if you pick through it, there are plenty that are free of sap wood and knots.

I did a mock tudor effect using scaffold planks 30 years ago, They were soaked in a black paint for farm cladding in a home made pressure tank, They were fixed with small raw bolts with a small piece of cedar made to look like a square peg over the bold head, The person i did it for was so tight but it looked fine.

Got the job.

Had to get screws from 3 different suppliers. Axminster tools said 7 weeks to get the other 11 boxes. Meh.

Day one finished. Gonna be a long week. Someone moved all the timbers and stacked them on pallets in a bog with and mixes the two sizes. Had to handball them all and the lawns have just been turfed. Joy.
Gone 11 by the time I picked up a tool. Not to bad for one man day I suppose.

I think it's only a major issue in green oak which in this case he is not using so in fairness just regular zinc exterior would do.

But looks like they won't to 'spend the money' on this job so why not go for stainless.
