NZ earthquakes

Not sure if we have any members who live in Christchurch, but as it's Christmas, perhaps we should send our best wishes to any who are putting up with earthquakes up to magnitude 6, about every half hour, since yesterday. Apparently parts of the area have moved up, or down, by up to 5 metres.

Good grief, didn't they have a spate of that earlier in the year ? Mother nature is certainly having a strop !! Fingers crossed for them.

A cousin told me her in-laws have got to get their house underpinned to make it safe, at least they can stay, others have been told ground is unsuitable for re-building so they have to move!

Luckily both my cousins live "out in the sticks" and were not affected.

Drainetta has family in Christchurch - one sis and her mom are north about 20k, so no probs, but one sister has a house in the city which is condemned, as is the whole neighbourhood. It's going to be turned into parkland.

Anyone who wanted to emigrate and had a speciality in structural steelwork/ any building trade (but not brikkies ), could do worse than move there. Once they decide where to site the new city (as they don't know whether to keep the business district where it is or go inland a few kilometers), there'll be more work than you can imagine.

It sure has ruined Christmas for some people. The main issue is liquefaction, with silt coming up through houses. A lot of people are in limbo, with houses that are not written off but not entirely habitable and rebuilding or reinsuring is impossible.

We felt the 6.0 aftershock in Dunedin, 200 miles south and immediately thought of Christchurch. At the very least, the weather is superb and those affected will be well looked after.
