Nut splitters

Has anyone any good experience with nut splitters and stainless nuts . One of our subbies decided was a good idea use impact gum on 10 and 12mm stainless bolts . So along with putting the bits up wrong he’s managed to bind the bolts . Is in brand new apartments and would rather not have to cut them all with grinder but don’t wanna buy **** splitter that will just go **** and end up needing grinder anyway

bolts are behind the heat pump and is final snag of subbies work ( handrails to low steel doors that didn’t close locks fitted wrong way round )

A good sharp cold chisel if you can get in….or dremel type cutter and plenty protection.

In my experience usually the thread on the bolt part will be damaged too so you will have to replace both the nut and bolt.
Nut splitters don't work that well on steel nuts so I can't imagine they would be better on s/s.
If you are concerned about sparks what about using a sawzall with a steel blade and plenty of lube?

yeah, nut guns and stainles is a hard lesson to learn....
this style of nut splitter is the tool to go for....
They dont damage the threads any more that what already happened....just stop tightening the splitting screw when there's a crack sound.....
I f u have the money u will also need a die to clean up the thread...there are solid dies that look like a nut...so norm if u can get a proper nut in u can get the thread die in as well....
U just run it down with a spanner or socket.....USE oil or something....
once done u'll be good to go....
if ur in a hurry u can buy a set from the likes of Machine Mart...had mine for years, they often come in handy for rust nuts.....

Don’t care about threads is to try protect paint and glass . The bracket on the wall was fitted wrong end and is too small is meant to be a low end one and Iv 15 more dividers for the site so if can save paint it’d help

Have you a close up picture of a typical nut that needs removing?

The nut splitter above has to slip over the nut, and if that nut is securing a thin bracket into a wall, it may limit how you can turn the bolt on the splitter - possibly to an open-ended spanner only.

The toy ones above would struggle on stainless, but if you search 'hydraulic nut splitter', you might find something that would fit the space and be strong enough. Hiring is an option.

Another could be a hole saw with an ID close to the stud's OD.

Pic would be useful. Is it a nut and bolt or nut on a stud in the wall ? I seized a few (not using a rattle gun though !!!) building my deck a few years back. 10mm from memory. They were relatively easy to snap with a couple spanner’s - I wonder if you could get in there and snap them off and replace both nut and bolt / thread ?

I have some experience of nut splitters, mostly on pipe flange bolts. They do work. Good ones work fine on stainless. Cheap ones might or might not. I've tended to use a Facom one on stainless nuts up to m20 and it's probably split upwards of 50. I have also used a Sykes hydraulic one when there wasn't clearance for the Facom one. That worked well too.

Drill down through the body of the nut along the axis of the thread, then split with a sharp, narrow-angled cold chisel.
Both sides, if need be.
That'll do the trick.....

They were relatively easy to snap with a couple spanners...

With a stud in the wall, if the holes in the replacement part coincide with the holes in the old part, the snapped-off stud may cause aggravation.

Bolts, no problem snapping them, but studs need some thought to the future.

If you can hold the fixing, why not try and drill the Nut or Bolt head off, you can get drill bits specifically for stainless.

Decent nut splitter will be your friend - and you might have to take a deep breath and spend a few quid, but the time saved, the lower risk of damage to your panels etc, will more than make up for mucking about with small drill bits, risk of slipping and damage, time wasted etc.

Grinders risk obvious damage, but also the hot particles flying off sticking in the glass, powder coat, anodising etc. If stainless it's not going to rust, but will harbour dirt, feel rough to clean etc.

Or try to undo them with a rattle gun big enough to shear them. They might undo. Or they might shear. Both of which sound like a positive solution.

I have two different size Sykes Hydraulic ones rarely used but saved me a few times.
Personally I would try a good Chisel first Proto are about the Best I have used never failed

Just used a grinder to split in the end . As went through them found that previous lad had used anything could find cause some the nuts were stuck in m20 washers was a pain to do but is done now

I'm not sure who 'we' are, but hexagon dies are usually referred to as die nuts and readily available.
