Numpty Plasma Q?

Hi, just received my Cobel Cut40 and looking at the torch not sure how to start. It has a tip inside an outer shield that has a cross hatch patern on the end.

All plumbed up, air in 16amp plug...

I know I need to touch the end to get it started but do I need to maintain a gap or do I drag that end with the cross hatch effect on it along the piece?

have had a cut 40 for about a year now, mine has hf start so pressing button with tip close to surface starts it, if yours doesnt have hf then you need to make contact to start with, anti spatter spray is a good investment, just to spray on the nozzle, stops bits of metal sticking to it. up until recently i always thought it was bad practice to touch the metal with the tip when cutting, but recently i have found it seems to make no difference to it at all except to make the little torch much more controllable when cutting out intricate shapes, although most of the time i maintain a gap when cutting, must be a inbred thing from my oxy ac days.

I drag the tip of my Clarke Plasma King along the surface, it has HF start. You can get little "trollies" to fit to the nozzle to maintain a constant gap.

Ditto with the above, drag the tip....I do it at a slight angle, not sure if it is totaly necessary but seems to keep the tip cleaner.
