Nozzle Tip

I'm working my way through my daft questions. I'm getting into this welding lark though.

I've been MIG welding to construct my new fence. The tip of my nozzle has quite a lot of spatter material on it. Is this normal? If not, what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Spatter, and spatter build-up is normal, although if you're getting everything "just right" you will find it takes longer to accumulate on the nozzle.

You can get cans of "Tip Dip" or anti-spatter sprays, which help to reduce buildup, for situations where you need to use settings that make a lot of spatter unavoidable.

To knock the spatter off, I usually unscrew the nozzle, jab the pointy bit of my MIG Pliers through the narrow end, and use a twisting motion like a reamer to remove all the spatter in seconds.

happens a lot on dirty steel and out of position , a tin of tip dip is no bad investment .
