Hi I want to attempt to stich a repair panel into a wing. All the videos suggest a butt weld. But I did see one where strips of metal were plug welded behind to support the repair patch then stich welded. I'm finding it difficult to get the patch flush any tips would be much appreciated

for small area's here'smy method
1) cut the rot out of the panel
2) cut /shape the repair section to shape
3) place a small steel ruler over the hole and the repair section on top of that
4) tack the repair section to the panel with a couple of tacks=
5) remove the ruler and adjust the alignment of the repair section.
6) add a few more tacks and seam weld the repair in place
on larger things I use the intergrips, and here's a photo of them when I was welding up the boot lid on my triumph herald

Welders magnets are useful or you could weld small piece of scrap metal to the patch and use it as a handle to hold the piece in place. If area is large and flat, flange tool Like RonA suggested speeds things up and you can find pneumatic versions too. If you get first tack flush with the panel you can use flat headed screwdriver or something similar to push and pry the patch to the correct level as you weld next tacks.
