Norberts Hyundai Terracan is dead. Again.

A.K.A. a real pain in the……….

His Hyundai Terracan was died, again.

I have just got it through its MOT. But it was not cheap.


I pointed out his rear diff has a whine on it, noticeable at speeds over 20MPH. All down to poor driving towing a caravan, that’s why I have replaced his Duel Mass Fly wheel. Twice.


His knowledgeable friend told him to tighten up the “Big nut on the Diff drive that will fix the wine. Oh yes add grease.”

The Hyundai Terracan needs a special oil in the diffs.


Today, driving home the diff exploded, he is on the back of a recovery lorry as we speak.

Yes I am laughing.


Apart from needing a new diff, any one know if anything else may of bean damaged, drive shafts etc. I am concerned the gear box may of suffered.


Any advice is gladly received.


I have access to a donor wreck, but that has no gear box.

Norbert is the partner of a long time friend of mine, she has the brains.

He used to be ok, but of a fool at times, but the last 18 months he has become a, see above.

Mid life crisis I think.

If the diff pinion nut has been over torqued then I doubt them have any damage to the box, I've not come across damage to a box on the back of a diff exploding.

I have known the diff lock up either its outer bearings or pinion bearings thus spinning the races and damaging the axle beyond repair.

We are assuming the centre dif can be manually locked.

A quick look last night.
Diff has exploded. 48 bits in a bucket.
Axil case has cracked.
Near side drive shaft snapped. Same side tyre has a flat spot.
The prop shaft has whiteness marks on it. Not sure if its bent or twisted.

Or in other words a mess.

He told me he done the same to front diff and all wheel bearing nuts.

Oh bother.

it wasnt a spec lift was it ?? flat spot n broken drive shaft sounds like it was dragged ?

The locked rear wheels were on skid sheets when it was winched on board.
Norbert claimed the wheel locked after "the big bang"

I will remove the prop shaft tonight, but it looks damaged.

Reminds me, I was out for a walk with my dad the other day, kids like to use the T junction near our house as a skid pan because it's out of the way and little traffic goes past, day and night. Sometimes you hear the whine of engines at night, but anyway, this contender decided to challenge the T junction at 10am. So he guns into it, turns hard and then bang! We both turned around to see the motor working light, driving nothing and chunks of metal all over the road. On the way back I picked up some very nice steel balls, I could have had the entire clutch assembly if I'd wanted, or indeed any part of the car which remained pushed into the ditch for about a week before it disappeared. For being in the middle of nowhere, you'd be surprised how many stupid things happen at that T junction.

We tried, but he was rejected as a Bio hazard.

Prop is out, bent and twisted. According to the Norbert it went wrong at 75MPH.

But There is something wrong at the front end.
Gear Box set to 4 wheel drive.
Jack the front end up, rotate the wheel, either side. The other one does not turn, prop turns, but rear output flange of the gear box does not, but there is a "Grinding" noise somewhere in the front drive train.


Now the average person, or in fact any one with working brains would scrap the wreck, chalk it up to experience and move on.

Not Norbert, he is looking for another donor, good luck with that, he wants his pride and joy repaired.

I have put him back o dried frog pills and de caff.
