Hey guys,
Been beating google up lately to learn as much as I can with regard to spray painting a car since i'm doing up my gf's mx5 and nearly every search I do lands me up reading a thread on here somewhere so I figured I may aswell sign up so I can ask questions!
Still got stuff to do mechanically yet so painting is a while off from happening yet (albeit I'm gonna get the gf started on doing some of the body prep work soon since the weathers improving - ohhhh she's gonna love that!!!
) but I want to make sure I've got everything I need and as much knowledge as I can before taking on the job.
My only experience of painting anything has been rat-can priming a wing (actually went ok!) so I don't have personal experience on my side but my brother's done a fair bit of diy spraying now and is happy to let me borrow his compressor and experience so hopefully it won't be too bad! To be honest, I think I'm possibly biting off more than I should be for a first proper go since the gf has decided she likes a candy blue colour but hey ho, guess i'll find out!
Anyways, a couple of questions .....
1) I've got my own hvlp gun(s) on their way (me and my bro don't share too well!!! - don't want to be responsible if one of his expensive guns goes wrong while i'm using it!) but I need to look at suitable line filters etc. My bro has been surviving by using an in-line filter before the gun but he said it wasn't great and I got the impression from reading stuff that they should be considered the last chance filter? I don't have scope for miles of copper piping around the place or indeed a small fortune to spend on pro filters though - any suggestions?
2) The paint and breathing. It's a pre-mixed paint that says it's ready to shoot. I don't know any more than that at the moment - going to email them and ask about it but, I'm thinking it's likely to be a 2k paint??? If that assumption is correct then I need to sort out an air fed mask etc - I think my brother uses a full face charcoal mask and only shoots 2k on occasions and in well ventilated areas but from what I've read, I don't fancy even chancing that .... something like a 2nd hand devilbiss mask seems to be obtainable from a certain auction site but I was wondering if it could be fed by a divers tank rather than a compressor? - For one thing, i'm guessing the tank is probably cheaper and for another, I'm not sure my neighbours would love me much for a 2nd compressor running!
Oh and if anyone has advice on painting candies please feel free to offer some pointers!
thanks in advance!
