a bit of a strange 1 but does anybody know if there is any kind of law to do with making noise at home because just been outside in the backgarden doing a bit of grinding/work on the stock car and had a blazing argument with the next door neighbour over the noise. i never do any work before 12 or after 5 and the noise is never constant.

Some advice on this page but basically..
So if your neighbour complains to the authorities you might find you will have to stop.
It's always best to try and get on with neighbours, apologise, talk to them, find out when they will not be disturbed (they must go out sometimes), if you behave in a reasonable manner hopefully they won't feel angry enough to make a formal complaint.

I think we past being friendly. had the same problem this time last year with them but I was doing alot more like every night and weekends so now only really do it on sataday afternoons an very rarely on a Sunday. To help keep the peace. I think they are miserable cause another neighbour races motorcross and the moan about them

best seek advice 1st from local councill then u know where u stand and can argue the toss. i used to build stockcars and rebuild em after a bad day lol still shotblast with diesel compresor its for personal use not a buisness is he bigger than u ???if u get my drift

Complete minefield this one. It's not just about noise level, it is about duration, frequency (how often) and type of noise if that makes sense. I bet he has a petrol mower, or a strimmer that he uses? It's also about the way it affects the neighbour. I'd be willing to bet that if you made noise on the odd occasion, the EHO would not be interested. If infact you started to run a business at the weekend, tuning chainsaws dusk til dawn, they would be interested. It's about persistent and aggravating noise. Sometimes even low level noise just at the wrong freq can drive you nuts. At least you know that this is upsetting your neighbour - he's let you know. But just as he is entitled to his peace, you ARE entitled to make a noise. I have great neighbours, but I still tell them when any noise is going to stop and that they can approach me anytime about it. You can always take the moral high ground and apologise telling him that you understand and that you will try to keep disturbance to a minimum when possible.
As this is common law, it's mostly about reasonableness. If I was him, I would be making notes in a diary about times etc. So try to vary the noise if you can so that there isn't a pattern. Any action by the council would always start with a discussion first, not action. So if you get a visit, try to show them what a fantastically reasonable chap you are. They're not daft.

I had a visit from a Planning Officer from someone who complained about me running a business from home. As it happens my premises are business premises in a residential area and the PO went away happy.
The complainer's complaint was about the noise my prototype glass crusher made, the guy asked me politely to stop because it was disturbing his sick baby, so I did. When I wanted to chop some RSJ and asked the guy if it was OK. he said it was. He (or more liklely his wife) still complained to the council though.
I did explain to the PO that it is my intention to fit a roller-shutter door at the entrance to my yard and soundproofing to my dust extractor.

chill out cant u take a joke look what i put to begin with (seek advice)
And it starts again lol its been nearly a year since the last letter from the coucil about nosiey car reapairs only to get home today to find another letter but this time about diy noise but i suppose its my own fault as i did use exta loud squeaky ladders and a noisey paint brush to paint the sofits. Maybe i should complain about there screaming kids and there 2 dogs that bark all the time.

It's all about balance, we had a few problems with next door when they went on holiday, they have 2 kids one late teens other early 20's so when mum and dad are away you can imagine what it's like.
We put up with the noise a few times, they'd always tell us if they were having a few mates round and it wasn't very often.
Things came to a stage where we had to put our foot down though, they came in one night at 1.30am and started with the music, by 1.32 the music was quiet.
I never make much noise ie grinding etc before 9am and after 7, I understand some of my nieghbours like a lie in and others (including us) have young kids
tends to only be on a saturday too.....

In case you missed it Shox, the OP is the one who's resurrected his own thread and for good reason.
Spoke to the council earlier seemed like a reasonable guy. He said the neighbours have been told to keep a diary of the noise and I'll hear back from the coucil at the end of the month. Which is fair enough but as Im away 2 weekends this month and the other saturdays I'm at work I'm not going to be able to do much work on the car. So it's going to be a quiet month for the neighbours. I just hope the council don't think Ive stopped work because of being monitored only to carry on a month later.

if you have a security camera with sound leave it recording just incase they make a few things up
Yeah I'm gona keep a diary but I like the idea of a security camera with sound although I haven't got one at least it'll show how much noise I make because I'd spend more time writing in a diary than getting work done. It only takes a couple of minutes to cut a bar most of the time is spent bending and getting it in the right place to weld it.
