I realise this is a very old thread now, but I just thought I would add something to it, a couple of years ago I started to get a high pitche'd hiss in both ears so went to see an audioligist, outcome was hearing loss in both ears, think it was low freq brought on by years of working with high pressure air compressors at sea, never wore any kind of protection as an apprentice ( wasn't really a big thing back in the 60's ) but wore them religiously when I went to sea, all different types over the years, at the end of the day it hasn't really stopped my hearing loss, so now wear custom fitted/made in ear plugs all day every day in the workshop, relatively expensive @ 70 quid for personal purchase, not to mention the idiot comments from the rest of the mongs, but I wouldn't be without them now.

Forgot to mention I have ended up having to wear noise generators, like hearing aids, every evening now to counteract the high pitched hiss of tinnitus.

Tinnitus here from working with helecopters and fast jets, even with proper hearing protection most of the time (I used to live on station so hard to wear 100% of the time) Probably mostly from a Tornado F3 taking off at full bore while I was 10' away from it at the end of the runway. Awesome spectacle but I'd rather not have tinnitus...

MOD won't pay out without 20% loss of hear to accompany it though.

Similar here ..... kin big bangs , high velocity rounds , big engine noises etc and now wrecked hearing has shown up big time .

Recently tinitus was waking me up and driving me crazy so I went and asked for a hearing test at the GP's ...who sent me to the hospital audiology dept .
As a result I've just been fitted with an NHS hearing aid FOC .

I'm Mutton Geoff in the upper ranges of a womans voice register and have certificates to prove it. .
TV and converstation in a noisy room was getting very difficult ,driving the car was by feeling the vibrations more than hearing engine noise & telephone conversations became so difficult I was handing the phone over to my wife of Munchkin .

The hearing aid is one of the latst digital ones available onthe NHS , they are still behind the ears fittings but each one is individually digitally set to give you best responses to a whole range of sound and piped it into your brain via an individually moulded ear piece .

When I went for the fitting and tune up it was amazing. I cold hear the gal touch typing on every key and I could hear birds chirping through the double glazing.

Traffic noise was startling , so is noisy kids . the piece auto adjusts to higher volumes of noise and has ten personal adjustments so you can hear without much of a tinny echo effect .
There is also an induction loop& phone setting you can switch on if needed .
The best advantage is that when the testing was done I found that the tinitus disapeared within a few seconds of the testing hearing aid being set up.
I get nothing of it at all with the supplied one when I wear it ..it's like a dream come true & as you can't sleep with one in your head. I was delighted to find that the tinitus still stays away for several hours after removing it ... letting me get off to sleep which is absolute heaven .

I'm chuffed with it but I was advised that you can't wear it n somewhere like a noisy workshop or else you get blasted with noise and it disturbs your concentration .

Our Welsh NHS also supplies the device batteries in six packs FOC on an automatic renewal cycle.

Right that's it, I'm off to the doctor for a referral. My tinnitus is driving me crazy now - I keep thinking I'm hearing stuff and going mental!

My ears are knackered after teen years with walkman on (I think) and decades of riding motorbikes (I know), but I always wear ear defenders in the workshop, even down to putting them on when vacuuming out the car - vacuums make the most annoying sound in the world for me.

I have tinnitus in my right ear, like a high pitched buzz all the time and I used to wear the squidgy foam earplugs at work. I was convinced once that a piece of foam had lodged in my ear as I went almost completely deaf in my right ear but it turned out the earplug had compacted earwax and blocked my ear. I had to put drops in for a week then had both ears syringed and when I came out of the surgery onto the main road I nearly jumped out of my skin when a lorry went past. I had dizziness when my ear was blocked and had to be very careful what I was doing on the stairs etc.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but you should still wear hearing protection even if your hearing has been damaged, otherwise you will progressively lose whatever hearing you have left.

peltor ear muffs with radio fitted ar the best sounding muffs about, worth every penny,they ar so good at blocking sound, that you can start a chainsaw and have to rev it flat out to hear it. (with radio on)
