I saw this picture on the internet and liked it for some unknown reason? Perhaps cos I'm now semi retired and don't need to rush about any more

Anyway, I drew it out into four smaller parts and cut them from 2mm steel on the CNC ..that took over an hour cos of the complexity....then welded them together.

It's just over a metre wide and 280mm high and now has pride of place in my newly decorated hallway

Very impressed with the detail, though the first bloke has quite sharp fingers. With my efforts, I doubt I could get the gear wheels so well.
It does look like Hergé/ Tin Tin Got a source for the original image?

Would like one of those in my hall too.

Thanks for the comments guys...yes he does look like Tin Tin !!

Kempifrog I'll send you the jpg file. Adrian I import a drawing onto the pc and then using an A4 tablet and pen I draw around the image...then export as a .dxf file. With the limitations of plasma in mind I always try to simplify things and if too small I either leave them out or make them bigger.

My maximum cutting area is only 40cm x 60cm so if a file is too large I cut it down and then weld the pieces together. When I made my 'Angel of the Wirral' it was 110 separate parts welded together!!

Do you use a water-bed-frame when cutting Gerry, I think in the past you said you did? I know that if I tried to cut some much detail then the metal would melt and distort very badly with the heat. So I understand the requirement to simplify.

Yes I converted my table with a water bath underneath to try and cut down the dust. As the X axis ballscrew is high up I have to have the water quite a way below so it doesn't help to keep things cool but does cut down on the dust...slightly Even with an extractor attached to the torch everything in my workshop has a layer of very fine black dust on it....horrible. I always use my mask now when it's cutting but the dust is a real pain.

I only use 20 amps when cutting so don't get distortion but on work like this the dross is a bu**er to remove.

That artist is brilliant thank you for the link. You did a great job on yours, I probably would add a time movement in the largest dial and make it a functional clock as well.
