This is a photo i took of a vauxhall chassis given to the college i go to for my night class in body refinishing, what i think is interesting is the whole of the assembly (im told) is untouched by human hand, every thing is roboted and ther are hundreds of spot welds, until a point in the assembly rotation when the two drop down windscrreen pillars have to be reinforced by weldiing around the bottom by hand. Now i think the guy had an off day because he missed 2 welds, rather than reintroduce and finish the car, it was simpler to give it away.

are those welds incase the car turns on its top to protect the driver passenger,!!! thats all i can think of.

its an integral part of the entire chassis. All GB cars are crash tested at Thatcham still as far as i know, and then examined for integrity regarding passenger safety only and most consideration is given to absorbtion of force. In a perfect test, they want the entire shell to crumple but leave the passenger compartment unchanged. If they find a weakness OR an overstrength which does not allow this to happen they will introduce an extra strength or weakness accordingly. This seam weld would have been one of their reccomendations.

Nick, what i find odd is that its probably cheaper to get rid of it than re-introduce back on to the production line.....

plus it gets all the college guys used to chopping and welding vauxhalls.

I worked in car manufacture for many years, it is sometimes not cost effective to rectify faults and I have seen finished cars sent to the crusher .

If the faults were cosmetic/non safety critical they would be registered and used as "pool" cars until they were crushed at 3 years old.

when i started this course i told the lecturer, i started here the year this college opened, he laughed his head off and said whats with you, cant you stay away!,
never a smart **** Nick, im not clever enough and still got to much to learn,
