My Mum and Dad have a leaking roof vent, it rains in over the bathroom. Annoying as its a fairly quick job to do and as a repair it just needs that vent replacing either like for like or with a none vented tile.

My roof ladder is a long way away and I'd need to do it fairly quick (which I can't) so I said just ring a trader from the local rag and get it done.. its a few quid of a job, worst case half a day if the trader is taking the mickey.

My dad rang me today telling me someone had been and he'd signed up for 2K of work and the guy reckoned it might need a new roof.

I've cancelled that work!

Nothing like honesty and integrity when dealing with old people - I hope someone treats them the same some day!

I said that to a cashier in strikes garden centre when I bought a 4lb bag of cement for 6 quid it went right over her head

Anyway a decent guy I know is going there tomorrow with a tile to sort it out. He's always mega busy but kindly agreed to call round tomorrow morning.

It still amazes me how many people fall for the 'I can tarmac your drive for £1200' and then once the money is in their hands they spray the drive with tar water.
Two people locally have fallen for it!

In this case, getting older and a little more vulnerable - being willing to exploit that vulnerability takes a 'special' type of person.

Actually my mum told me later she didn't like the little XXXX the moment she saw him :-)

Funnily enough I was in Strikes one time and Adam Ant's 'Stand and Deliver' was playing on the radio
Seems all garden centres now do more trade in their 'tea rooms'...

What is tar water....we had a cowboy do the drive 20 years ago and small holes are starting to appear. You can see why as its had jacks and welding trollies dragged up and down and the bits that have come up were only 3/8 deep at best to the old original drive.

I will get it done when the neighbours "go away" but till then could i patch it with tar water or is there something i could use instead.

Bloke opposite where my Ma-in-law lives was chuffed with the nice thick layer of tarmac - until he tried to open his up and over garage door. Then the car sank into it.

GF had her block paved drive "cleaned and resanded" by someone (not a pikey!) for £200.
She went out, leaving him to it, and paid him when she returned.
"He's got rid of all the weeds, and oil stains"

I knew there was going to be an issue when I arrived and the drive looked like a beach.
(Sand just strewn everywhere)

Couple of days later, we had a really heavy rainstorm.

Sand is now in little patches where the water settled deepest.
The oil patches and weeds are back.

£200 to spray water on, and a couple of bags of building sand!!!
