nice score from neighbour

next door neighbour is caretaker at local school, came to door yesterday asking if i could use woodworking bench.
well as we all know good benches are always useful so said yes.
be ready at 8 in morning with trailer he says.
got to the school this morning to find 3 benches each with 2vices on load of perspex, 10"rd sandbag for metal shaping and a mini kiln waiting for me.

so now got load of excess woodworking vices and a kiln.

as hes locking up says they are getting rid of drill presses and bandsaw but will need to sign form stating they are for spares only and not in running condition.

they were only pat tested beginning of month.
me thinks my neighbour will be getting few crates of beer come payday.

I take it that this is because schools no longer teach practical subjects any longer?

It does seem to me to be a really short sighted policy in view of the skills shortage.

I think it's more that councils & schools are scared of being sued for exposing the little dears to the risk of these nasty dangerous machines! So much safer to pop them infront of a PC.

It doesn't matter if they were pat tested yesterday all the pat tester does is test electrically,not mechanically, they could be knackered or mechanically useless & still pass, & as for kids not using drills,routers lathes biscuit jointers orbital sanders scroll saws etc, of course they use them in d&t,they can't use the bandsaw or circular saws of course as you need to be qualified, there are a lot of myths around about not using tools etc,obviously some schools are not bothered about d&t others specialise in it, as a footnote if a student is using say a router or lathe it would be on a 1 to 1 basis but scroll saws sanders etc they use themselves.

they are getting a brand new purpose built extension, with all new tools, which is why the stuff is going.
newest bit of kit in there is 5 yrs old benches nearer 20.

Sounds just like the school I went to, the big variable speed lathe was either broken or used to refurb parts of the metal work teacher's MGA or B, we could only use the small Boxford (?)

I used the D&T department at a local Grammar school a few weeks back to weld up a couple of things for them.
Welding bay was fairly impressive; couple of Oerlikon migs, stick set, oxy acetylene, folder, guillotine, nothing huge, but certainly enough good gear to knock up a few nice things. The rest of the place was well kitted out, lathes, linishers, saws, sanders. Nice to see.
