has your existing chuck got a threaded backplate fitted or do u have a catchplate for lathe. if so take old chuck of it get a new chuck and mount it on to it

It’s a proper backplate, it’s a possibility if all else fails but I need a second plate for a 4 jaw chuck

They're few and far between. A secondhand 6" backplate made £58 in February this year.

I tried that - the backplate turned out to be homemade with about 100 thou runout,

I meant a bought one with the chuck taken off .fit on to the lathe and face it up its then 100 percent accurate

I am told all lathe chuck backplates should be faced up on the lathe they are going to be used on to minimise any run out I have done two one was new and the other was a bigger second hand one to fit the Drummond

Square threads are unusual plus they are a bit of a bitch to cut, but not impossible. The vee form threads and ACME have several advantages. They are stronger, easier to cut, somewhat self-centering and less susceptible to damage.
