Hi all I just had a quick 2 questions. And they are
1. Do they make a flux core wire for aluminum.
2. How much is a tank of co2 argon mix? So I can get rid of the flux core. Is it easier to weld with flux core or gas?
Argon can be pricey, so strait co2 is great for low start up. No flux core aluminum, that's blasphemy. Look in to dual shield flux core, or outershield flux core wire. Fun stuff. Beautiful welds. But very hot, lots of slag and consumables will be used. Solid mig wire, cheep way to go. both are easy if your famillure.with the mig process
I have a 120CF tank, just over 4' tall. The tank cost me about $175. Refills are about $41.
That is pure argon, 75/25 Ar/CO2 may be a bit cheaper.
You will need pure argon for aluminum and 75/25 for steel. Stainless would want another mix.
I have a 30 lb bottle of CO2. Refills are about $28 and one fill has lasted me many years.
Edits:
Find a local gas supplier. Prices vary wildly. I have paid $40 to $74 to refill the same bottle. Depends on place and sometime the mood of the guy at the counter.
I use AirGas, used to be named Holox, Linde and other names I don't remember. Lots of mergers going on.
Northern tools sells bottles, I asked about mine and they wanted $56 to fill (swap) but I had to use their bottle that was $259.
