Hi Guys,
I found your very useful forum while googling for welding info. Great resource!

Funny thing, I am South African, settled in the UK and married to an English wife, I spent months persuading her that getting a welder was a good idea....

In SA it's quite common for a bloke to have an arc welder, and to DIY burglar bars, gates and the like.. is DIY welding less common here? Will my neighbour look down me if I weld in my garage??? (not that I care too much!!!)

If you've got neighbours like mine, then yes, they will get the right hump if they see any twinkling blue lights and hear the sound of angle grinders. The most manual work my neighbours get up to is gardening and painting their houses. Anything more than that seems to be frowned on.

Hi,

I guess I'm lucky that over the years I've done lots of odd jobs for all of our neighbours...extension phones, cabled TV aerials to various rooms, car-repairs including the odd bit of welding.

Although I have personal rules such as not starting before 9.00am on a weekend and stopping anything 'noisy' at 7.00pm.

So they put up with me as an 'eccentric'...

The hovercraft on the front car-port helps in this respect!

Our area is very quiet which can be nice, but I'm the only one who ever makes any noise in the garage. (wish the other neighbours would sometimes)

The gardening crowd definitely don't like it

Mr Snowcat - you have me bang to rights. I really liked Hockley when we first came here in '92 and I still quite like it now. Plenty of footpaths, local shops (for local people), coupla pubs an that. Some peeps even still say g'mornin when I'm out with my mutt.

It's just the toffee-nosed t#ats I can't stand. Certain roads, even.
Thinking of moving as/when I can retire and go somewhere that the property is a bit cheaper so I can have a proper garden with a big shed and some distance between me and the neighbours. I'll take wifey with me of course.

TBH bill i think thats most peoples long term plans who live in this area Its certainly mine.....

Its become Soooo expensive to live in this little part of the world, mostly from london money swamping the area im sure....the problem is most of them have the 9-5s weekends off and hate anyone having to go about there bussiness when there not working, for good messure they might even join a Parish Council then really become a pain in the ****...school teachers and the chattering classes seem to also fall into this niche of people iv had said brushes with.... a dose of self employment might give them a diffrent view and certainly less time to gripe.
