I had something to paint the other day
I hate painting as i have always done it with a brush/roller and i am utterly gash at it
so i bought this
http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Painting+&+Decorating/d150/Metal+Paints+&+Primers/sd3152/Anti+Corrosive+Quick+Drying+Metal+Primer+Paint/p59129
and this

Feeling a wee bit flush i also bought a wonderful silverline gravity feed spray gun.

I expected the gun to be trash but i thought i would give it a shot
It turned out to do a far better job then i could with a brush and i didn't get covered in paint
So i have sort of seen the light. Spraying is far easier
So i need some recommendations to improve this
I will be paint 99% things i have welded together for around the house and garden. The chances of me doing a car is less then zero. if it is gate or something then it will be sent off to get galvanised. Paint prep will be knotted wheel to get the worst of the rust of and a quick blow down with a airline.
My main hopes are to make stuff not look terrible and not fall apart from rust. I know i should spend far more time and effort on prep but I won't.
if i want a professional job i will get the paint shop at work to do a homer.
I want to know the following
Once the silverline paint gun dies (it will its silverline) what should i buy to replace it. budget £50ish
How should i look after the new gun as i cleaned out the feed pot and squirted some thinners through it
What paints to buy. I have no interest in the 2K stuff as it seems way to dodgey. I want simple easy stuff that gives a reasonable finish. Not looking for the cheapest. Something quick drying that is reasonably idiot proof. The bay of E being the preferred purchasing environment but quite happy to try commercial places.
The garage is well ventilated with a big fan at one end. I will either be spring inside there or in the garden where the spray can feck off into the world. I have currently a crappy wee compressor that came out of a skip. So currently not enough capacity for air fed mask. But it will soon be returning to its skip to be replaced with a 14cfm monster. Should i bother with a carbon filter mask or go for a air fed and bring compressor upgrade forward.
My priorities are easy, long lasting and safe. Price is not the highest as long term it hopefully pay for itself
