hey everyone i stumbled upon this forum while looking for some information on migwelding. looks like a great place with lots of good information,
I am currently working on a rear burner rotisserie smoker to use in local amatuer cook off compitions. I am also recovering from a nasty case of "FLASH BURN" to the eyeballs after a bout of welding up some hinges......wrong shield in my mask and backdrop reflection did a number on the retnas and the cheeks and nose....a good learning experiance for me if i may say so....
well thanks for the forum and looking forward to getting to know a few folks out here, hoping to get a few questions answered and maybe i can help with a few as well....

Welcome to the forum. We could all learn from your flash burn incident - what grade of mash were you using, and what did you have behind you to reflect the light?

I've had 2 months off work for eye relate problems over the last year (gardening rather than welding related in my case) and I know how painful they can be.

I got some rust in mine a few weeks back from an angle grinder/wire wheel. Had to have it picked out with a hypodermic needle and yeah it hurt for a week or so. Eyes are just not something to mess with.

as for the mask, I was under the impression it was a #10 shield....looks like it was more a #6 shield, the guy i got it from think he may have changeds the lens in it a while back to do oxy/cet work......i will never make the mistake of trusting that guy again.
i did order a full face mask with the larger size window #10 shield as well as a #11 & #12 shield for backups if i need them, ironically i ordered them the day i burned my eyes after welding but before the injury set in......
I have also had rust as well as plywood in the eye in the past, i cant stress enough to wear saftey glasses all the time, i get made fun of all the time on the job but you know what I am the only onewho doesnt get crap in the eyes so that puts me ahead of the game i guess....

Welding Lenses

Hi Anthony,
Shade 9ew is the MINIMUM you should use for electric arc processes on LOW amperage, shade 10ew being the norm for typical home use type work.
Use 11ew on heavier work.
You only get one pair!
